EFL Championship PREVIEW 15 Aug 2026: Bolton Return, Boro's Heartbreak Recalled as Championship Kicks Off

Bolton Wanderers begin life back in the Championship at home to Preston North End on Saturday lunchtime, back at this level for the first time since 2018-19. Bolton went up through the play-offs in May, beating Bradford City 2-0 on aggregate in the semi-final before a 4-1 win over Stockport County in the final at Wembley, Rodrigues scoring twice including a penalty and Sam Dalby adding another. Middlesbrough's home game with Lincoln City brings together a side still smarting from the cruellest of finishes and one starting life back in the second tier for the first time in years. Boro finished fifth last season with 80 points, went through to the play-off final on Southampton's disqualification for unauthorised filming of rivals' training sessions rather than on the pitch, and then lost that final 1-0 to Hull City, Oli McBurnie scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time in front of 84,506 at Wembley. Lincoln arrive after winning League One outright with 103 points from 46 games, a goal difference of plus 48 and a run of 29 games unbeaten, finishing 12 points clear of Cardiff City for their first League One title.

Sheffield United host Birmingham City on Saturday evening. Birmingham were League One champions in 2024/25 with 111 points and a goal difference of plus 53, and settled into their first season back in the Championship with a tenth-placed finish last term, Marvin Ducksch and Jay Stansfield sharing the scoring lead on ten league goals apiece. Sheffield United's own recent history has been turbulent: they finished third in the Championship in 2024/25 but lost the play-off final to Sunderland after extra time, a result that led to Chris Wilder's contract being terminated. Bristol City's meeting with Millwall at Ashton Gate pits a club still adjusting to a managerial change against one coming off its best modern-era season. Norwich City's home game with West Bromwich Albion follows contrasting campaigns. Norwich finished ninth with 65 points from an unusually volatile record of 19 wins and 19 defeats, Jovon Makama their leading scorer with ten in the league. West Brom survived by four points and one place after a two-point deduction for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules, a season that saw three permanent or interim managers before James Morrison was made permanent on 30 April 2026.

At Fratton Park, Portsmouth host Queens Park Rangers in a fixture separated by very little last season: Portsmouth finished 18th with 55 points, three points behind QPR in 15th. No all-time head-to-head record between the clubs has been established.
