EFL Championship REVIEW 17 Aug 2026: Colwill's Late Leveller Denies Moore-Inspired Wrexham at Cardiff

Cardiff City 1-1 Wrexham. Kieffer Moore, once a Cardiff forward himself, put Wrexham ahead inside three minutes at the Cardiff City Stadium, but substitute Rubin Colwill levelled in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time to send the home crowd into celebration and leave the Championship’s newest Welsh derby honours even.

It was a rare occasion for the fixture. Cardiff City hosted Wrexham on the season's opening day "in one of the most eagerly awaited opening-day fixtures of the new Championship season," with the two Welsh clubs meeting in league competition for the first time in 24 years. Cardiff arrived back in the second tier after finishing second in League One last season, while Wrexham had ended the previous campaign in seventh, agonisingly short of the play-offs. The draw leaves both sides on a single point from their opening fixture, sitting mid-table in a Championship where eight clubs already have maximum points from game one.

The two had met more recently in the League Cup, when Cardiff won 2-1 away at Wrexham in October 2025 en route to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. Moore had scored an equaliser for Wrexham in that game too, before a late Will Fish goal settled it. Colwill said afterwards of the travelling support: “Fair play to them, they were having a good battle with the Wrexham fans, they were at it all game so it was special for us to give them that experience.” It was Colwill again providing the decisive intervention against Wrexham, this time to rescue a point for his own side rather than settle a cup tie.
