EFL League One REVIEW 15 Aug 2026: Luton Fight Back From 3-1 Down to Beat Reading 4-3

Reading led Luton 3-1 at half-time and lost. J. Richards put Luton ahead inside six minutes, but J. Marriott scored three times in half an hour, at the 8th, 31st and 38th minutes, to send Reading in front 3-1 by the break. Luton turned it on its head after the interval: K. Palmer scored twice, at 50 and 52, to level at 3-3, and G. Kodua completed the turnaround with a 90th-minute winner to make it 4-3. Reading, in their fourth straight League One season under new owners Redwood Holdings, will wonder how a two-goal cushion disappeared; Luton, seventh in League One last season but EFL Trophy winners at Wembley, opened with about as dramatic a win as is available.

Notts County drew 1-1 at home to Leicester City, a fixture that says plenty about how far Leicester have fallen since finishing fifth in the Premier League in 2020/21. Leicester, relegated from the Championship last season after a six-point deduction for breaching profitability rules, are starting life in League One. J. Joseph put them ahead at Meadow Lane in the 62nd minute, but Notts County, back in the third tier for the first time since 2014/15 after winning last season's play-off final at Wembley, equalised through C. Grant in the 81st.

Bromley's first away trip in the third tier ended in a win. V. Adeboyejo scored the only goal of the game at Oakwell in the 70th minute as Bromley, League Two champions last season and in the Football League for only the third season in their history, beat Barnsley 0-1. At the Kirklees Stadium, Huddersfield Town beat AFC Wimbledon 3-0 despite having B. Mumba sent off in the 29th minute; by then D. Sanches Fernandes had already scored twice, in the 4th and 16th minutes, and B. Radulovic added a third in the 78th to make the red card academic.

Sheffield Wednesday, relegated from the Championship alongside Leicester, opened with a 2-1 win at Leyton Orient: C. Slattery put them ahead in the 19th minute, J. Olowu levelled for Orient in the 26th, and J. Lowe scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 66th. Bradford beat Peterborough United 2-0 through M. Gillesphey and N. Powell, with Peterborough reduced to ten men when D. Okagbue was sent off in the 85th minute. Cambridge scored three without reply against Wigan inside an hour, K. Watts, L. Appere and I. Heath all on target, and held on to win 3-2 as S. Perkins and A. Higgins pulled two back late on. Oxford United, back in League One after two seasons in the Championship that ended in relegation, led through M. Harris in the 20th minute but trailed by the 34th as C. Goode and A. Collins put newly-promoted MK Dons 2-1 ahead; C. Brown's 90th-minute equaliser completed a 2-2 draw.

Elsewhere, Mansfield beat Doncaster 2-1, R. Oates and L. Reed either side of a J. Senior leveller; Blackpool and Wycombe drew 1-1, F. Onyedinma's early strike cancelled out by F. Munroe; Burton Albion led Stevenage through J. Armer's 74th-minute goal before O. Sanderson equalised in the 90th; and Stockport County, beaten in last season's League One play-off final, won 3-1 at Plymouth, J. Diamond, K. Wootton and R. Glover all scoring before X. Amaechi's late consolation.
