UEFA Conference League REVIEW 13 Aug 2026: Two Shootout Twists as Borac and Austria Wien Progress Despite Losing

Thursday's third qualifying round second legs produced two shootouts that ran to the same strange script: the side that won on the night still went home. MKK-Dnepr beat Borac Banja Luka 2-1 after extra time — Denilho Cleonise put them ahead just before the break, Matej Deket levelled on the night in the 103rd minute and Artem Kontsevoy struck in the 120th — but Borac had won the first leg 1-0 and the tie finished 2-2 on aggregate. Borac won the shootout 4-2 and went through despite losing on the night. Austria Wien lost 1-2 to Beitar Jerusalem, Omer Atzili and Johnbosco Kalu putting the visitors two up before Kelvin Boateng replied, but Austria had won the first leg 2-1 in Jerusalem, so the aggregate finished level at 3-3. Austria won the shootout 4-2 to progress.

Partizan went a goal down inside seven minutes at Tobol, Islam Chesnokov scoring for the home side, but goals from Stefan Mitrovic just after the break and Chaka Traore in the 90th minute turned the second leg around, Partizan winning 2-1 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate after their 3-0 win in Belgrade the week before.

Elsewhere the aggregates were rarely close. Twente had already won the first leg 6-0 at home, and DAC Dunajská Streda led the return 3-2 in the 88th minute before Marko Pjaca's second goal of the night made it 3-3 in the final minute, Twente going through 9-3 on aggregate all the same. Nordsjaelland thrashed Valur 5-0 at home to complete a 7-0 aggregate win. Drita beat Tre Fiori 5-0, Kemehlo Nguena and Arb Manaj both scoring twice, to finish the tie 9-1 up. St. Gallen put five past Sheriff Tiraspol, Diego Besio and Andrin Hunziker both scoring twice, for an 8-2 aggregate. And Hajduk Split beat Zalgiris 4-0, Dario Melnjak, Adam Guram, Abdoulie Sanyang and Michele Sego all scoring in the second half, to finish the tie 9-2 up on aggregate.

Sion also came from behind, Helder Ferreira's penalty putting Noah ahead before Winsley Boteli equalised and Baltazar struck the 63rd-minute winner, sending Sion through 4-3 on aggregate. Motherwell beat HJK 2-0, both goals from Ibrahim Said inside the first quarter-hour of the second half, to complete a 3-1 aggregate win. Tromsø, already 5-0 up from the first leg in Cluj, added a 2-1 home win over CFR Cluj to make it 7-1 overall. Gent were held 1-1 by Göteborg, Matties Volckaert's goal cancelled out by Saidou Alioum late on, but went through 2-1 on aggregate on the back of their first-leg win in Sweden.

Elsewhere: Flora were beaten 4-0 at home by Inter Club d'Escaldes, Faysal Chouaib scoring twice as the visitors completed a 6-0 aggregate win; Ilves drew 1-1 with Rijeka but went out 2-1 on aggregate; Qarabag beat Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 to progress 2-1 despite losing the first leg; RFS lost 1-2 at home to Jablonec, finishing with ten men after Aleksandar Filipovic's 83rd-minute red card, and went out 4-1 on aggregate; Dinamo Minsk were held 0-0 by Braga, who went through 1-0 on aggregate; Hammarby lost 0-1 at home to Raków and had Amin Boudri sent off, going out 1-0 on aggregate; Midtjylland beat Bohemians 3-2 to complete a 5-2 aggregate win; NSI Runavík drew 2-2 with Lugano but went out 4-2 on aggregate; Vaduz drew 2-2 with Inter Turku but the Finns progressed 4-3 on aggregate; Shkëndija were held 0-0 by Hibernian, who went through 2-1 on aggregate; Győri ETO drew 1-1 with Riga FC, Zeljko Gavric's penalty cancelled out by Caio Ferreira, but Riga went through 2-1 on aggregate; Shelbourne drew 2-2 with Ajax Amsterdam but the Dutch side went through 5-3 on aggregate; and Dinamo Tirana beat Auda 4-0 to complete a 4-1 aggregate win.
