Our model had West Ham at 48 percent to win this, the draw at 27.1 and Wrexham at 24.8. For a home side that is barely a call at all, the kind of number that usually precedes a long, tight evening. Instead West Ham scored six, through six different players, and Taty Castellanos, whose fitness had been in doubt and who was passed fit only in time to start, got the fourth.

It did not look like that for a while. Anthony Patterson tipped a Jarrod Bowen drive onto the bar, and at the other end George Dobson got a shot away that Konstantinos Mavropanos cleared off the line. Bowen scored on twenty-eight minutes, turning in a low cross from Morato. Joel Piroe made it two on thirty-seven after Castellanos ran through and squared. And on forty-eight it was Mavropanos, the man who had cleared one off his own line, rising to head in Bowen's corner.

Castellanos got the fourth on sixty-three, West Ham breaking from a Wrexham corner and Kyle Walker-Peters teeing him up. Mohamadou Kante, on as a substitute at sixty-eight, ran onto a Manor Solomon ball over the top and scored on seventy-six. Solomon finished it himself on eighty-two, his shot going in off a post, with Walker-Peters again the man who made it.

Phil Parkinson had made six changes from the side that drew 1-1 at home with Burnley on Tuesday, bringing in Zak Vyner, Joe Worrall, Danny Imray, George Dobson, Callum O'Hare and Sam Smith for Max Cleworth, Dominic Hyam, Issa Kabore, Matthew James, Josh Windass and Kieffer Moore. Cleworth is out for eight weeks with a hamstring injury. Worrall made his Wrexham debut in the centre of defence, and Dobson his first start of the season.

A crowd of 59,172 watched it, the largest in Wrexham's history, and it watched a run end: Wrexham had not been beaten in an away game in London since their return to the Football League, eight of them, the most recent the 3-0 win at Millwall. Parkinson had called the night "very special" beforehand, looking forward to "a Wrexham team going there to play in front of the highest ever crowd", and had named Bowen as the player everybody would be talking about. Bowen scored the first and made the third. West Ham's last four now read 4-2 against Wolverhampton Wanderers, 3-0 against Derby County, 3-2 at Bolton Wanderers, and this.
