EFL Championship PREVIEW 13 Sep 2026: Our model and the market disagree about Sheffield United, and one of them is wrong

Sheffield United host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Bramall Lane on Sunday morning, and our model likes the home side a good deal more than the bookmakers do. Our consensus makes it 39.8 per cent Sheffield United, 25.7 the draw, 34.5 Wolves. The market has our pick at 25.2. That gap is the story of the fixture, and it is also why this is the least confident call we have published this weekend: on the scale we use, where five is the most likely upset and one the least, this is a five.
Five of our eight models favour Sheffield United and three make it Wolves, which is about as evenly divided as the set gets. Worth saying plainly what that is and is not: the bands in the middle of our scale sit inside the noise, and only the extremes have separated reliably in the season we measured them over. A five is a flag, not a forecast.
Chris Wilder would probably take the compliment and then list his absentees. Harrison Burrows, Femi Seriki, Tahith Chong and Ryan One are all out, Kalvin Phillips is still building fitness, and Hamza Choudhury came off after 58 minutes at Blackburn with fatigue. Wilder has been blunt about it: "We're scrambling at the moment." He has switched to a back three, and Liam Kitching, a deadline-day arrival, is expected to partner Japhet Tanganga.
There is a debut to watch. Jordan Ayew joined as a free agent on Tuesday and sat on the bench at Blackburn the same evening; he should feature here. Wilder was as interested in his durability as his ability, and there is a second homecoming on the same team sheet — Matt Doherty faces Wolves for the first time since leaving Molineux in the summer after close to four hundred appearances across two spells and two promotions.
Sheffield United arrive having lost once in eight matches in all competitions, and they got there the hard way on Monday: 1-2 down at Blackburn Rovers, Tom Cannon levelling and Sydie Peck winning it before half-time. That followed a 1-3 home defeat by Norwich City, which remains the only blemish on a run that also takes in 0-0 with Birmingham City, 0-0 at Swansea City, 2-2 at Cardiff City and 3-2 against Bolton Wanderers.
Wolves have scored freely and stopped nothing. They have conceded in every league match so far: 2-2 with Blackburn Rovers, 1-3 at Preston North End, 4-1 against Stoke City, 4-2 at West Ham United and 2-2 at Birmingham City on Sunday, where they led and gave it up. Cesar Peixoto does not think the defence needs rebuilding so much as tightening — closing the block quicker when the ball goes long, keeping the lines together — and he has asked for a harder edge with it, more strength in the duels and, when it is needed, more fouls.
Kieran Trippier and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde have returned to training and could make the bench, though neither is ready to start; Yerson Mosquera is not expected back before the international break. Fer Lopez has been the pick of the Wolves attack, and Adam Armstrong and Raul Jimenez both started at Birmingham.
A Sheffield United side held together with tape against a Wolves side that cannot keep a clean sheet is exactly the sort of fixture where a model and a market part company. One of them is wrong.
