EFL League One REVIEW 2 Sep 2026: one from five, as every away call the model made went wrong

A miserable one from five for the model, which leaned to the away side in four of the five games and watched the home team win every one. The heaviest was Reading 5-0 over Mansfield Town — Jack Marriott twice, Benn Ward and a first league start for George Earthy before the break, Jacob Brown late — a brutal comedown for a Mansfield side that had put five past Luton at the weekend.
Its one correct call was Burton Albion, who conceded first and won 4-1 against AFC Wimbledon: Jayden Stockley's opener overturned by George Evans, an Alistair Smith own goal, Charlie Webster straight after the restart and summer signing Caylan Vickers, Wimbledon out-shooting Burton and still losing by three.
The other misses all went the home way. Barnsley beat Blackpool 2-1 through Cameron McGeehan and an 87th-minute Amani Richards header to end Blackpool's unbeaten start; Wigan Athletic took their first points 3-1 over Milton Keynes Dons, Jensen Weir scoring twice; and Luton Town answered their Mansfield mauling with a 2-0 home win over Stockport County through Nahki Wells and Callum Marshall.
