Premier League REVIEW 21 Aug 2026: Havertz, Saka, Odegaard sink Coventry as Arsenal begin title defence

Arsenal began the defence of their Premier League title with a 3-0 win over Coventry City at the Emirates, Kai Havertz opening the scoring in the 15th minute before Bukayo Saka doubled the lead in the 23rd minute, both in the first half. Martin Odegaard added a third in the 49th minute to settle it. Our model had made Arsenal favourites at 73%, and so it proved.

It was a landmark night for the visitors regardless of the scoreline: Coventry were back in the top flight for the first time since 2001, ending a 25-year wait, and playing at the Emirates. Arsenal's own preview had flagged just how difficult that history makes life for promoted sides at the ground, noting the club came into the match having won 17 of their previous 18 Premier League games against promoted opposition since the start of 2023/24, with only a 2-2 draw at Sunderland breaking that record, and unbeaten at home against promoted clubs for a run the club described as the longest of its kind in the competition's history.

Mikel Arteta had also arrived unbeaten in his previous meetings with Frank Lampard's teams, and made clear before kickoff how highly he rated the scale of Coventry's rise back to the top flight, calling Lampard's work "incredible" and the club's achievement "remarkable" in his pre-match press conference. Lampard, for his part, had urged his players not to shrink from the occasion, saying before the game "you can't start with a harder place to go" than the champions' own ground, and that he wanted Coventry to show they had come into the season with no fear.

For Arsenal, the win extended a strong start to the season that began with the Community Shield on 16 August, when Christos Tzolis marked his debut with two assists in a 3-0 win over Manchester City at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. The Greek forward started again against Coventry and was again heavily involved in the opening goals, playing a part in the buildup to both Havertz's and Saka's finishes.
