Four fixtures, three of them at one o'clock, and three of them a club's first home game of the season. Chelsea host Brighton and Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge with Danny Welbeck lining up against the club he left at the start of August, after nine years and a two-year deal that runs against Chelsea's stated preference for players under twenty-five. He is not the only one facing former employers: Moises Caicedo, a doubt after a training injury that kept him out of the last two matches, came from Brighton, and Xabi Alonso said he was hopeful of having him back for exactly that reason.

Brighton arrive with a forward line held together with tape. Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, Stefanos Tzimas and Evan Ferguson are all long-term absentees, Jack Hinshelwood picked up a training injury after scoring twice against Aston Villa, and Georginio Rutter faces a late fitness test having spent the week in a protective boot. "I'm not here to complain; I'm here to find solutions," said Fabian Hurzeler. Chelsea have their own uncertainty in Enzo Fernandez, left out of the League Cup squad amid transfer talk, and in goal, where a deal for Emiliano Martinez has been agreed too late for him to be registered.

Manchester United play their first home game under Michael Carrick at half past three, a week after losing at Hull City. Amad is out for a matter of weeks after a training injury and the new signing Carlos Baleba is not ready either, but Mason Mount has trained and Lisandro Martinez, Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are all, in Carrick's words, massively in contention after their World Cup summer. "Your only kind of success comes from how well you deal with setbacks," he said. Ipswich Town are not coming to sit in. Gary O'Neil has been plain about it, promising the same shape and the same approach: "We back ourselves to be ourselves." Exequiel Palacios, signed from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee in excess of twenty million pounds, is expected to make his debut, most likely from the bench, against the club whose centre-half he won a World Cup with.

Leeds United open at Elland Road against the best-placed side in the division to spoil it. Daniel Farke reports everybody available, with Gabriel Gudmundsson and Willy Gnonto back in team training for the first time since their injuries and Ilia Gruev into his second week with the group, and he is under no illusions about the visitors: Brentford, he said, are "one of the most complicated tasks you can have right now", a side nobody has found a way to stop. They beat Tottenham Hotspur three-nil in their opening match and won six-one at Birmingham City in midweek. Keith Andrews is without Sepp van den Berg and Antoni Milambo, and did not know on Friday whether El Hadji Malick Diouf, signed from West Ham United in a deal worth up to forty million pounds, would be registered in time to play.

Sunderland's first home game of the season comes three days after they were drawn against AC Milan in the Europa League, their first European campaign in fifty-three years. "It's iconic, Milan," said Regis Le Bris. "It's a massive club, massive history so to get back in Europe with that fixture, it's a symbol." The immediate business is Fulham, and Sunderland will do it without their record signing: Dayann Methalie, the left-back from Toulouse, must serve a one-match ban carried over from France before he can make his debut. Simon Adingra is still out. Fulham bring Gonzalo Garcia, signed from Real Madrid this month, who has scored in each of his first two appearances, and are without their captain Tom Cairney after knee surgery.
