One Major League Soccer fixture to come, San Diego FC against the Philadelphia Union at Snapdragon Stadium, and our models make it 42.8 per cent to the home side against 33.1 for the visitors and 24.1 for the draw. That is a favourite, but read the set underneath and the disagreement is the story. The venue model has San Diego FC at 57.9 per cent and the table model at 50.6; the shots model has them at 26.7 and the market at 34.8. The two that pay closest attention to what has actually been happening on the field are the two that pick the Philadelphia Union.
The reason is not hard to find. The Philadelphia Union have not been beaten in nine matches, the most recent of them a 5-0 win at home over FC Cincinnati in which Bruno Damiani scored three, with Quinn Sullivan and Milan Iloski adding the others. Sullivan's goal came on his return from a knee ligament injury.
San Diego FC arrive from the opposite direction. Their last match was a 3-2 home defeat by the San Jose Earthquakes in which they were three down inside 35 minutes, Anders Dreyer among the scorers in the recovery that fell short. Before that they had won three at home in a row, 1-0 against FC Dallas, 3-0 against the Colorado Rapids and 3-1 against the LA Galaxy, which is the run the venue model is looking at.
They will be without the goalkeeper who was sent off in that San Jose match, CJ Dos Santos having collected two yellow cards, and Marcus Ingvartsen has not played since 22 August with a lower-body injury. Mikey Varas has been blunt about the pattern: "We've seen two sides to our group this year. We've got to decide pretty quick which team we are. And that's on me."
The Philadelphia Union's own turnaround has an interim manager behind it. Ryan Richter took over after Bradley Carnell was dismissed, and was named coach of the matchday after the Cincinnati result.
There are two returns in this one. Milan Iloski spent the 2025 season on loan at San Diego FC, scoring ten times in fourteen appearances before the loan was terminated and he moved to the Philadelphia Union in August. David Vazquez, once a Philadelphia Union homegrown player, is set to face them for the first time from the other side.
The two clubs have never played each other before, which is part of why the models are so far apart: nothing in the fixture's own history is pulling any of them towards the middle. San Diego FC have four days of rest, the Philadelphia Union five.
