Our model made Morton narrow favourites at Cappielow, in about as close to a three-way call as it gets, and the market disagreed with us sharply the other way. Livingston won 4-1. Of the eight components behind our number, the three that preferred the visitors — recent form, the league table, and the market line itself — were the three that were right. We log it as a result against our own favourite, and as a near-miss rather than a shock, which is the polite way of saying the call was close and still wrong.

It was David Martindale's first match back in the dugout. Livingston dismissed Glenn Whelan on 6 September after nine games in charge, along with his assistant Danny Ventre, following a home defeat by Stenhousemuir; Martindale, the club's sporting director, stepped in on an interim basis alongside Frankie McAvoy, appointed the day after. He has been plain that the arrangement is short-term and that Livingston should be looking elsewhere for a permanent appointment. Ian Murray saw what was coming. "I expect a reaction from Livingston," the Morton manager said beforehand. "Glenn losing his job was unfortunate, and when teams decide to change manager, things can change very quickly."

The reaction arrived after thirty-five minutes, Liam Polworth finishing once Morton had been opened up down their right. Robbie Muirhead doubled it on the stroke of half-time with a deflected effort, and for a spell after the break the evening looked like it might turn: Michael O'Halloran struck on the counter after fifty-four minutes, and Morton had a game to chase rather than one to survive. Emmanuel Danso ended that with a volley in the seventy-seventh minute, and Jordan Doherty added the fourth in the eighty-eighth.

For Livingston it closes a run of two league defeats, at Arbroath and then at home to Stenhousemuir, and it is the night a caretaker would have taken before kick-off. Morton went into it bottom of the Championship, and O'Halloran's finish was the whole of their resistance. There is no published all-time record between these two to reach for — neither club's own sources carry one — but there is a symmetry in what each has won: a single major trophy apiece, Morton's Scottish Cup of 1921/22, taken 1-0 against Rangers, and Livingston's League Cup of 2003/04, taken 2-0 against Hibernian. The match was moved to a Friday for live coverage on BBC Scotland, which gave a national audience a fair look at both of them.
