Three matches, three home defeats avoided only at Celtic Park and Tynecastle, and one afternoon that belonged entirely to Dundee United. They won 4-0 at Kilmarnock and the match was gone by half time: Agyei scored on 12 minutes, Sapsford converted a penalty on 36, and Ferry made it three on 41. Randall added the fourth on 77. Kilmarnock did not score.

Celtic beat Falkirk 2-1 and had the game where they wanted it inside half an hour. Duran scored on four minutes and again on 29, and it stayed 2-0 until Falkirk got one back on 72. Two goals from one forward inside half an hour is the sort of start that decides a match before either side has settled into it, and so it proved.

Heart of Midlothian beat St Johnstone by the same score. Wilson put Hearts ahead on nine minutes, the second arrived on 39, and Paton pulled one back for St Johnstone three minutes into the second half. Hearts held the last forty minutes without conceding again.

Nine goals across three fixtures, four of them at Rugby Park, and no side that fell behind managed to recover the match. Dundee United leave with the result of the round; Kilmarnock leave with the one they will want to see the back of.
