The club

Aarhus Gymnastikforening were founded in 1880 in Aarhus as a gymnastics and fencing club. Football was added in 1902, and the first match, against Aarhus Idrætsklub Olympia in November 1902, was lost 5-2. The club is known as AGF, and its nicknames are De Hvii'e, the Whites, and Byens Hold, the City's Team. The playing colours are white and red at home and black and white away. The number 12 is retired in favour of the AGF Fanclub Aarhus.

This is not Aarhus Fremad. Fremad are a separate club in the same city, traced to Aarhus Fodsportsforening "Fremad" of 1897 with a football department established in 1947, playing at Riisvangen Stadium in Aarhus N with a capacity of 5,000, and in the 2025/26 Danish 1st Division, the second tier, they finished the season eighth of twelve. The two clubs have met competitively: Fremad's first Superliga match, in 1997, was against AGF and Fremad won it 2-1. They have also shared facilities, Riisvangen being swapped temporarily with AGF's ground in Vejlby. AGF are the larger club and the one with the European history; Fremad are the second club in Aarhus. When a fixture list says Aarhus without qualification in a European or Superliga context, it means AGF.

The ground is Aarhus Stadium, sponsored as Ceres Park since 2015 after the local brewery Ceres. It was built in 1920, designed by Axel Høeg-Hansen in a red-and-white neoclassical style, and inaugurated on Constitution Day with King Christian X present. The record attendance is 23,990, set on 23 October 1962. The last match at the old stadium was a Danish Cup tie against Brøndby on 8 December 2024, won 1-0. At the beginning of 2025 AGF moved to Vejlby, a northern suburb, into a temporary 11,500-capacity ground known since February 2025 as Ceres Park Vejlby, while the new stadium is built. Vejlby does not meet UEFA's requirements, so AGF's European home matches in 2026 have been played at Cepheus Park Randers.

The head coach is Jakob Poulsen, appointed on 20 June 2025. The chairman is Jacob Nielsen. John Stampe holds the appearance record with 444 matches between 1977 and 1991. Former players include Henning Jensen, later of Real Madrid, and the European Championship winners of 1992 Kent Nielsen and Flemming Povlsen, alongside Stig Tøfting and Marc Rieper. The main rivalry is with Brøndby, sharpened through the 1980s and 1990s; the Battle of Jutland is against Aalborg BK, and there is a further, largely one-sided rivalry with Randers.

Recent seasons

AGF finished third in 2022/23 with 51 points from 32 matches, 14 wins, 9 draws and 9 defeats, 42 goals scored and 31 conceded, which took them into the Conference League second qualifying round. In 2023/24 they were fifth in the regular season on 36 points from 22 and fifth again after the championship round, on 44 points from 32. In 2024/25 they were third in the regular season on 36 points from 22, with 9 wins, 9 draws and 4 defeats, but took only 4 points from the ten championship-round matches and finished sixth on 40, with 10 wins, 10 draws and 12 defeats, 53 scored and 46 conceded, in a season Copenhagen won on 63 points. 2025/26 was the transformation. AGF won the Superliga with 67 points from 32 matches, 19 wins, 10 draws and only 3 defeats, 62 goals scored and 32 conceded, seven points clear of Midtjylland on 60 and seventeen clear of Nordsjælland on 50. Tobias Bech was top scorer with 12 league goals. Average home attendance at the temporary Vejlby ground was 9,244. They also reached the semi-finals of the Danish Cup.

Honours and landmarks

Danish champions six times, in 1954/55, 1955/56, 1956/57, 1960, 1986 and 2025/26. Danish Cup winners nine times, in 1954/55, 1956/57, 1959/60, 1960/61, 1964/65, 1986/87, 1987/88, 1991/92 and 1995/96, and runners-up in 1958/59, 1989/90, 2015/16 and 2023/24. The club also won the Atlantic Cup twice, in 2018 and 2020.

The 2025/26 title ended a wait of forty years. It was sealed on 10 May 2026, the penultimate matchday, when AGF beat Brøndby 2-0 and Midtjylland could only draw 0-0 away at Nordsjælland. It was Jakob Poulsen's first season in charge.

Notable scorelines

The club's record win is 13-1 against Fremad Amager in 1934 — Fremad Amager being a Copenhagen club, and no relation to Aarhus Fremad. The heaviest defeat is 0-9, suffered three times, in 1940, 1946 and 1968. The biggest win of the 2025/26 title season was 6-2 at home to Viborg on 17 May 2026.

European record

AGF entered the European Cup in 1955/56, its first season, and lost 4-2 on aggregate to Reims in the first round. Their best run came in 1960/61, when they reached the quarter-finals and went out to Benfica, who won the competition that year.

The other deep run was the 1988/89 Cup Winners' Cup, a quarter-final lost 1-0 on aggregate to Barcelona, who also went on to win the trophy.

In the UEFA Cup and Europa League AGF have appeared in seven seasons since 1960/61, usually going out early but recording wins over Standard Liège in 1970/71 and 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1997/98. The full season-by-season European record was not established from the sources read here.

Jakob Poulsen is still the head coach. AGF entered the Champions League as Danish champions, at the second qualifying round, with a UEFA club coefficient of 8.421.

The Lech Poznań tie was the season's set piece. AGF lost the first leg 4-1, played at Randers because Ceres Park Vejlby is not a UEFA venue, and were given nothing at the Enea Stadion in Poznań on 29 July 2026. They then won there 4-1 after extra time. Tobias Bech scored on 32 minutes with a deflected effort, Kristian Arnstad converted a penalty on 54 after Robert Gumny handled a delivery, and Fredrik Tingager headed in a corner on 75 to force extra time. Filip Jagiełło pulled one back for Lech on 95 from a rebound before Tomas Kristjansson restored the three-goal margin on 100. It finished 5-5 on aggregate and AGF won the shootout, the goalkeeper Mads Hedenstad saving two penalties; sources read here give the shootout as both 4-3 and 5-4, and the exact score was not established.

The third qualifying round was against Sabah of Azerbaijan, who had knocked out The New Saints 4-1 and then KuPS. AGF won the first leg 2-1 at Cepheus Park Randers on 5 August 2026, then lost the return 4-0 on 11 August and went out 5-2 on aggregate.

That dropped them into the Europa League play-off round, against Benfica. The first leg at the Estádio da Luz on 20 August 2026 was lost 3-1: Rafa Silva scored after two minutes, Leandro Barreiro on 31 and Vangelis Pavlidis a penalty in first-half stoppage time, with Sebastian Jørgensen replying for AGF on 36. The second leg is at Cepheus Park Randers on 27 August 2026, kicking off at 20:00 local time, and AGF have declared it sold out. It is the same opponent that ended their best-ever European run in the 1960/61 European Cup quarter-final. Losing means no European league phase.

Domestically the defence of the title has started badly. After four matches AGF had 3 points, no wins, three draws and one defeat, 6 scored and 7 conceded, and stood tenth of twelve, with Brøndby leading on 13 from five. Their third matchday was postponed, along with those of Copenhagen, Midtjylland and Nordsjælland, for European preparation. They drew 2-2 with Odense on 23 August 2026, and face Randers on 30 August and Midtjylland on 2 September. Sebastian Jørgensen arrived on loan from Malmö and Rasmus Carstensen on loan from 1.
