AS Roma

This dossier concerns Associazione Sportiva Roma, the Italian club based in Rome and playing in Serie A, sometimes referred to in English as "Roma" or "AS Roma." It is not Real Salt Lake or any other club that trades on the "Roma" name; it is the Rome club founded in 1927, colours carmine red and golden yellow.

The club

AS Roma was founded on 7 June 1927 through a merger of three existing Roman clubs, Roman FC, SS Alba-Audace and Fortitudo-Pro Roma SGS, an amalgamation driven by Italo Foschi, a figure in the ruling National Fascist Party, with the aim of giving the capital a club able to compete with the dominant clubs of the Italian north. The club's colours, carmine red and golden yellow (giallorosso), are drawn from the traditional colours of the city of Rome, and the badge carries the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus from Rome's founding myth. Roma are known as "I Giallorossi" (the yellow-reds), "I Lupi" (the wolves) and sometimes "La Magica."

The club has played at the Stadio Olimpico since 1953, a 70,000-plus capacity stadium shared with city rivals Lazio, and second in Italy only to Milan's San Siro for size. Earlier grounds were the Motovelodromo Appio (1927-28), Campo Testaccio (1929-40) and the Stadio Nazionale del PNF (1940-53); Roma also played at the Stadio Flaminio during 1989-90 while the Olimpico was rebuilt for the 1990 World Cup. Roma have been owned by the American Friedkin family, through Dan Friedkin, since 2020, succeeding the American ownership of James Pallotta that had run from 2011.

The head coach is the Italian Gian Piero Gasperini, appointed on 6 June 2025 on a three-year contract to the summer of 2028, replacing the retired Claudio Ranieri after Gasperini's nine years in charge of Atalanta.

Roma have won Serie A three times, in 1941/42, 1982/83 and 2000/01, and the Coppa Italia nine times, in 1963/64, 1968/69, 1979/80, 1980/81, 1983/84, 1985/86, 1990/91, 2006/07 and 2007/08. They have won the Supercoppa Italiana twice, in 2001 and 2007, and also hold the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup from 1960/61, the Anglo-Italian Cup from 1971/72, the Coppa CONI from 1928 and a Serie B title from 1951/52. Roma's first major European trophy in over sixty years came in the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League, won in 2021/22 under José Mourinho with a 1-0 final win over Feyenoord in Tirana, Nicolò Zaniolo scoring the only goal; it also made Mourinho the first coach to have won all three UEFA men's club competitions. Roma have twice been beaten in major European finals since: the 1984 European Cup final, lost on penalties to Liverpool at their own Stadio Olimpico after a 1-1 draw, and the 2023 UEFA Europa League final, lost 4-1 on penalties to Sevilla after a 1-1 draw in Budapest, an own goal by Gianluca Mancini cancelling out a Paulo Dybala opener. Roma's biggest recorded European win is 7-1 away to Gent in 2009/10 Europa League qualifying. Domestically, they set a Serie A record home score with a 7-0 win over Empoli in 2023/24. Their heaviest European defeats are 1-7 away to Manchester United in the second leg of the 2006/07 Champions League quarter-final and 1-7 at home to Bayern Munich in the 2014/15 Champions League group stage. More recently, in 2024/25 Roma beat Parma 5-0 at home on 22 December 2024 and lost 1-5 away to Fiorentina on 27 October 2024; in 2025/26 they beat Fiorentina 4-0 at home on 4 May 2026 and lost 2-5 away to Inter Milan on 5 April 2026.

European record

Roma's deepest historic European runs are the 1960/61 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup win, the 1983/84 European Cup final defeat to Liverpool on penalties at their own ground, and the 1990/91 UEFA Cup final defeat. In the modern era they reached the 2022/23 Europa League final, beaten on penalties by Sevilla, having won the first Europa Conference League the year before, in 2021/22, beating Feyenoord 1-0 in Tirana under José Mourinho. In 2023/24 they reached the Europa League semi-finals, where they were eliminated by Bayer Leverkusen. In 2024/25, under Claudio Ranieri, they reached the round of 16 of the Europa League before elimination. In 2025/26 they again reached the Europa League round of 16, this time losing to Bologna 5-4 on aggregate, a tie that finished 1-1 in the first leg on 12 March 2026 before Bologna won the return 4-3 after extra time on 19 March 2026.

Ahead of the 2026/27 season, head coach Gian Piero Gasperini said of squad building: "We don't have to add too much just to do it, we need useful players who want to play for Roma." Asked in early September 2026 about growing Scudetto talk after Roma's unbeaten start, following comments from players Bryan Cristante and Lorenzo Pellegrini about the title, Gasperini said: "You should never stifle your dreams. In the 2026 summer transfer window Roma's incoming business included the forward Rodrigo Mora from FC Porto for a reported 25 million euros, the defender Nahuel Molina from Atlético Madrid for a reported 13 million euros, and the youth forward Lorenzo Paratici on loan from Sampdoria; total incoming spend for the window was reported at around 179.1 million euros. Outgoing moves included Filippo Reale loaned to Carrarese, Luigi Cherubini loaned to Benevento, and Robinio Vaz loaned to Hull City with an option to buy.

Roma have started the 2026/27 Serie A season with three wins from three, top of the table on nine points with ten scored and one conceded: a 4-0 home win over Fiorentina on 24 August 2026 in which Donyell Malen scored a hat-trick, all three goals set up by Paulo Dybala, and Niccolò Pisilli added a fourth; a 4-0 away win at Lecce on 31 August 2026; and a 2-1 win over Atalanta on 5 September 2026.
