The club
Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio were founded on 17 October 1907 by students of the Liceo Classico Paolo Sarpi in Bergamo, Lombardy, and named after the huntress of Greek myth. In February 1920 the club merged with the local rival Bergamasca and took its present name and its black and blue vertical stripes, which is why the club is known as the nerazzurri and, from its namesake, as La Dea, the Goddess. The current crest dates from 1993. The ground opened in 1928 and is now called the New Balance Arena, having previously carried the names Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia and Gewiss Stadium; capacity is 23,439. The chairman is Antonio Percassi. Atalanta made their Serie A debut on 12 September 1937, drawing 0-0 away to Genoa, and lost their first home match in the division 1-0 to Juventus a week later in front of more than 15,000 at the Brumana ground. One source put the club's support at about 314,000 people as of 2022 and noted that being an Atalanta supporter is part of the identity of Bergamo.

The 2024 Europa League final was won 3-0 against Bayer Leverkusen at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on 22 May 2024, in front of 47,135, refereed by Istvan Kovacs of Romania. Ademola Lookman scored all three, on 12, 26 and 75 minutes. Gian Piero Gasperini managed Atalanta and Xabi Alonso managed Leverkusen.
