Austin FC
Also written as Austin.
The club
Austin FC play in Major League Soccer and are based in Austin, Texas. The club grew out of an attempt by the ownership group Precourt Sports Ventures to relocate the Columbus Crew to Austin: in October 2017 Precourt announced plans to move the Crew, and Columbus supporters campaigned against it, including a "Save the Crew" movement. In January 2019 an Ohio-based group that included Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam bought the Crew's operating rights and kept the team in Columbus, which cleared the way for Austin to be awarded a separate MLS expansion franchise instead of inheriting the Crew. Austin FC was officially announced on January 15, 2019, with Anthony Precourt as chairman and Two Oak Ventures, formerly Precourt Sports Ventures, as the ownership group. The ownership expanded in July 2019 to include the actor Matthew McConaughey, the entrepreneur Eduardo Margain, the former Dell executive Marius Haas, the energy entrepreneur Bryan Sheffield and the real estate businessman David Kahn.
Austin FC is not the Austin Aztex, an earlier Austin club that played in the Premier Development League and then the United Soccer League between 2011 and 2017 before dissolving over stadium issues; there is no organisational link between the two. It is also a different club from the original Austin Aztex of 2008 to 2010, which relocated and eventually became Orlando City's MLS franchise.
The club plays at Q2 Stadium at McKalla Place in North Austin, which opened on June 19, 2021 with a 0-0 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes; capacity is 20,738. The colours are a bright verde green and black. Austin FC's first head coach was Josh Wolff, appointed on July 23, 2019 and in charge until October 6, 2024. Davy Arnaud took over as interim coach, Nico Estévez was appointed on November 20, 2024, and Estévez was released on May 18, 2026, when Arnaud returned as interim head coach. Jim Curtin has been announced as head coach starting in 2027.
Recent seasons
Austin FC's first MLS match was a 2-0 defeat away to LAFC on April 17, 2021; Diego Fagúndez scored the club's first MLS goal, in the 3-1 win over Colorado Rapids that gave Austin its first victory a week later. The debut season, 2021, ended with a record of 9 wins, 4 draws and 21 losses, 31 points, 12th in the Western Conference, missing the playoffs. In 2022 Austin finished 16 wins, 8 draws and 10 losses for 56 points, second in the Western Conference and fourth overall, reaching the Western Conference final. The 2023 U.S. Open Cup and Copa Tejas details beyond the trophies below were not established from the sources read here. Through the middle of the decade the club has not returned to the same heights: in 2026, through 21 matches, Austin FC have 5 wins, 6 draws and 10 losses for 21 points, 14th in the Western Conference, under interim head coach Davy Arnaud following the May release of Nico Estévez and sporting director Rodolfo Borrell.
