FK Austria Wien

The club
FK Austria Wien were founded on 15 March 1911 and play in Favoriten in the south of Vienna, at the Generali Arena, formerly and still often called the Franz Horr Stadion. The ground holds 17,565. The club are known as Die Veilchen, the Violets, and play in violet and white. Austria and their city rivals Rapid are the only two Austrian clubs never to have been relegated from the top flight. The club's defining figure remains Matthias Sindelar, who was voted the greatest Austrian footballer of all time in a 1998 poll.
Recent seasons
The Austrian Bundesliga splits after the regular season and halves the points, so published final tables read low. In 2025/26 Austria finished fourth in the championship round on 29 points from 32 matches, 14 wins, 5 draws and 13 defeats, 45 scored and 50 conceded. LASK won the title on 39, from Sturm Graz on 37, Red Bull Salzburg on 29, Austria fourth on the same points, Rapid on 27 and Hartberg on 25. The season-specific record read here gives a different set of totals for the same campaign, 36 points from 31 matches, 14 wins, 5 draws and 12 defeats, 45 scored and 47 conceded, and the difference between the two sets of figures was not reconciled from the sources read here.
The rest of 2025/26 was thin. Austria went out of the Austrian Cup in the first round. Johannes Eggestein was top scorer with nine league goals and ten in all competitions, and the highest home crowd was 15,600 for the visit of Rapid on 15 February 2026. Stephan Helm was manager throughout and remains so.
Honours and landmarks
Austria have won 24 Austrian league titles and 27 Austrian Cups, both national records, along with six Austrian Supercups. They won the Mitropa Cup twice, in 1933 and 1936, when that competition was the most serious club tournament in central Europe.
Notable scorelines
Austria reached the European Cup Winners' Cup final in 1978 and lost it 4-0 to Anderlecht. The following season they reached the semi-finals of the European Cup and were beaten 1-0 on aggregate by Malmo FF. European record
Austria's deepest European runs belong to the late 1970s: the Cup Winners' Cup final of 1978, lost 4-0 to Anderlecht, and the European Cup semi-final of 1979, lost to Malmo. Their first and so far only appearance in the Champions League group stage came in 2013/14, after the 2012/13 title, their 24th.
In 2025/26 they entered the Conference League at the second qualifying round and won 5-0 away at Spaeri of Georgia on 31 July 2025. They went out in the third qualifying round to Banik Ostrava over legs played on 7 and 14 August 2025. The sources read here gave conflicting aggregate figures for that tie and the aggregate is therefore not stated.
The 2026/27 Conference League campaign began at the second qualifying round against FK Liepaja of Latvia. Austria won 2-0 in Liepaja on 23 July 2026 and 3-1 at home on 30 July 2026, through 5-1 on aggregate, and were drawn against Beitar Jerusalem in the third qualifying round.

Right now (2026/27)
Stephan Helm remains head coach. The domestic season has begun badly. The league table current to 10 August 2026 has Austria bottom of the twelve after two matches, played two, lost two, no points, no goals scored and five conceded. The sources read here did not agree on which clubs those two defeats came against or on the individual scorelines, and they are therefore not stated. Reported summer business includes the sale of Abubakr Barry to Red Bull Salzburg for a fee given as three million euros, and the free arrivals of Stefan Schwab from Holstein Kiel and Lukas Malicsek from Admira, with Jussef Nasrawe joining from Bayern for a small fee. Those transfer details come from secondary compilations rather than club announcements and should be treated as reported rather than confirmed.
Europe has gone better. Austria are in the third qualifying round of the Conference League against Beitar Jerusalem. The first leg was played on 6 August 2026 at the Stadionul Ilie Oana in Ploiesti, Romania, Beitar using a neutral ground, and Austria won it 2-1. Noam Muche put Beitar ahead on 19 minutes, Vasilije Markovic equalised on 45 with a finish into the top corner, and Sanel Saljic scored the winner on 69 from a Daniel Nnodim pass. Goalkeeper Samuel Sahin-Radlinger was widely rated the best player on the pitch. The second leg is at the Generali Arena on 13 August 2026, with a Europa League play-off place the prize.
