FC Bayern München
The club
Fußball-Club Bayern München was founded on 27 February 1900 at the Café Gisela near Odeonsplatz in Munich, by eleven members of the MTV 1879 Munich gymnastics club who broke away under Franz John after MTV's committee refused to let its football section join the South German football association. John became the new club's first president. Bayern won their first national championship in 1932, but the club's defining era came in the mid-1970s, when, captained by Franz Beckenbauer, they won the European Cup three seasons running, 1974, 1975 and 1976.
The club plays at the Allianz Arena, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, which opened on 30 May 2005 at a cost of around 340 million euros. Capacity was 66,000 at opening and rose to 69,000 in early 2006 for Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal matches; the current maximum is 75,024, with UEFA competition capacity set lower, around 70,000. Before the Allianz Arena, Bayern shared the Munich Olympiastadion, and before that played at the Grünwalder Stadion.
Bayern are the most successful club in German football, with a record 34 Bundesliga titles (35 national championships in total counting the pre-Bundesliga era) and 20 DFB-Pokal wins as of 2026. They have won the European Cup or Champions League six times, in 1974, 1975, 1976, 2001, 2013 and 2020, and have completed the domestic-and-European treble twice, in 2012/13 under Jupp Heynckes and in 2019/20 under Hansi Flick. They have also lost European Cup finals in 1982 (1-0 to Aston Villa), 1987 (2-1 to Porto) and 1999 (2-1 to Manchester United, having led into stoppage time).
The head coach is the Belgian Vincent Kompany, appointed on 29 May 2024 on a contract running to 30 June 2027, later extended to June 2029, after Bayern parted with Thomas Tuchel at the end of 2023/24. Kompany arrived from Burnley, whom he had just relegated from the Premier League, in what several outlets called a surprise appointment at the time.
Recent seasons
Bayern won the 2022/23 Bundesliga, their eleventh title in a row, sealed on the final day when Jamal Musiala's late winner against Köln combined with Borussia Dortmund only drawing at home to Mainz; the title was decided on goal difference for the first time since 1999/2000. The exact points total was not established from the sources read here.
That run ended in 2023/24, Kompany's first season not yet begun and Tuchel's last in charge: Bayern finished third with 72 points from 23 wins, 3 draws and 8 defeats, as Bayer Leverkusen won the league unbeaten.
Kompany's first season, 2024/25, brought the title straight back: Bayern finished champions on 82 points, their 33rd Bundesliga title, with 23 wins from 32 games and only two defeats, scoring a league-high 93 goals, eight points clear of second-placed Leverkusen on 69. In 2025/26 they retained the title in record-breaking fashion, losing only once all season, on 89 points with a Bundesliga-record 122 goals scored, and completed the league and DFB-Pokal double; Borussia Dortmund were runners-up on 73 points, with RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart following.
Honours and landmarks
Bundesliga champions a record 34 times (35 German championships overall), most recently in 2024/25 and 2025/26. DFB-Pokal winners 20 times, most recently in 2026, and before that 2020, 2019, 2014 and 2013. European Cup/Champions League winners in 1974, 1975, 1976, 2001, 2013 and 2020, and runners-up in 1982, 1987 and 1999. Bayern completed the continental treble, league, cup and European Cup in the same season, twice: 2012/13 under Jupp Heynckes, beating Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final and Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal final, and 2019/20 under Hansi Flick, beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the Champions League final in Lisbon with a Kingsley Coman goal.
Franz Beckenbauer's captaincy of the mid-1970s European Cup three-peat is the club's foundational landmark; Vincent Kompany, in his first two Bundesliga seasons at the club, became only the fourth coach after Ernst Happel, Pep Guardiola and Hansi Flick to win the title in each of his first two campaigns in charge.
Notable scorelines
Bayern's record Bundesliga win is 11-1 at home to Borussia Dortmund in November 1971. Their heaviest Bundesliga defeat is 0-7 away to Schalke 04 on 9 October 1976. In Europe, Bayern beat Sporting CP 12-1 on aggregate in the 2008/09 Champions League round of sixteen, winning 5-0 away and 7-1 at home on 10 March 2009, one of the biggest aggregate wins in the competition's history. In the DFB-Pokal, Bayern beat fifth-tier Bremer SV 12-0 in the first round, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scoring four. Other specific record scorelines were not established from the sources read here.
European record
Bayern's European story is built around two eras of dominance separated by long gaps. The 1974-76 three-peat, with Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller and Sepp Maier, made them the third club to win the European Cup three years running. A second wave came at the turn of the millennium: a Champions League win on penalties over Valencia in 2001, and defeat to Manchester United in the famous 1999 final in which Bayern led until stoppage time before United scored twice through Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær. The 2012/13 treble under Heynckes, capped by a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, and the 2019/20 treble under Flick, capped by the 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in Lisbon, are the club's two most recent European triumphs. Bayern also lost finals in 1982 to Aston Villa and 1987 to Porto.
In the 2025/26 Champions League league phase Bayern faced Sporting CP among others, winning 3-1 at the Allianz Arena on 9 December 2025 after Lennart Karl helped them come from behind.
Quotes
Vincent Kompany, on the anticipation of a Bundesliga title celebration: "For me, the anticipation is great because that was the goal, to bring the league trophy back to Munich." On winning consecutive titles: "I see every title as the first, so that's why I'm looking forward to it." Beyond these remarks, no further directly quoted material was confirmed from the sources read here.
Right now (2026/27)
Vincent Kompany remains head coach, seeking a third straight Bundesliga title and his third in charge. Bayern's league season opened with a home win over VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena on Friday 28 August 2026, followed by an away trip to promoted Schalke 04 on 5 September, with a visit to top-flight debutants SV Elversberg following. The full early-season Bundesliga table was not established from the sources read here.
In the transfer market Bayern's major incoming business was Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt and Ismael Saibari from PSV Eindhoven, both reported at fees around 50 million euros. Outgoing, Alexander Nübel was sold to Beşiktaş for around 5 million euros, Noël Aséko moved to Eintracht Frankfurt for around 12 million euros, and Jonah Kusi-Asare joined Fulham. Bayern were also linked with a move for Florian Wirtz but did not meet the fee before he joined Liverpool. Further squad business beyond these deals was not established from the sources read here.
In the 2026/27 Champions League, Bayern were drawn in the 36-team league phase to play Arsenal, Real Betis, Bodø/Glimt and Slavia Prague at home, and Atlético Madrid, Manchester United, Lille and Viking Stavanger away. On 10 September 2026 Bayern beat Bodø/Glimt 5-0 at the Allianz Arena, all five goals coming in the second half: Jamal Musiala, making his first start since collapsing twice the previous month, scored in the 47th minute, Harry Kane added a second in the 61st, Alphonso Davies made it 3-0 in the 77th, and Michael Olise scored twice, in the 83rd and second minute of stoppage time.
