The club
Bristol Rovers were founded in 1883 and play at the Memorial Stadium in Horfield, north Bristol, which holds 12,534. The club are officially the Pirates but are universally the Gas, a name that began as an insult aimed at the gasworks beside their old Eastville home and was adopted by the supporters and eventually by the club itself. They play in blue and white quartered shirts with blue shorts.
The ground history is a large part of the club's identity. Rovers left Eastville on 26 April 1986 after a 1-1 draw with Chesterfield and spent the next ten seasons groundsharing with Bath City at Twerton Park, outside the city entirely. They returned to Bristol for 1996/97 at the Memorial Stadium, buying half the ground for £2.3m and the other half for £100,000 in 1998.
Recent seasons
Rovers finished 14th in League One in the curtailed 2019/20 season with 45 points on a points-per-game basis, then were relegated in 2020/21, finishing bottom of League One with 38 points. The 2021/22 League Two campaign ended in one of the more extraordinary final days in EFL history. Joey Barton's side went into 7 May 2022 needing to overturn a five-goal deficit on Northampton Town and beat Scunthorpe United 7-0, five of them in the second half, to take the third automatic promotion place on goals scored. Both clubs finished on 80 points with identical records.
Back in League One they finished 17th in 2022/23 with 53 points and 15th in 2023/24 with 57, then went down in 2024/25, finishing 22nd with 43 points. In 2025/26, their first League Two season since 2021/22, they finished 14th with 62 points from 46 games, 19 wins, 5 draws and 22 defeats, 56 scored and 65 conceded. Darrell Clarke, in his second spell, was sacked on 13 December 2025 after 27 games with a win rate of 29.6 per cent. Steve Evans took over on 16 December 2025 and signed a new two-year deal on 11 April 2026. Fabrizio Cavegn was the leading scorer with 15 in all competitions; he and Ellis Harrison each scored 11 in the league. Rovers went out of the FA Cup in the second round, the EFL Cup in the first and the EFL Trophy in the third. Average home league attendance was 8,051, and the biggest crowd was 11,126 against Cheltenham Town on 25 April 2026.
Honours and landmarks
Rovers have never won a major national trophy. Their honours are the Southern League title of 1904/05, the Third Division South Cup in 1934/35, the Watney Cup in 1972, and the Third Division championship of 1989/90. They have been beaten finalists in the Football League Trophy twice, in 1989/90 and 2006/07. They have won the Gloucestershire Cup 32 times.
Their highest league finish is sixth in the second tier, in both 1955/56 and 1958/59. In 1955/56 they missed promotion to the top flight by four points, which remains the closest the club has come to the First Division.
Geoff Bradford is the record goalscorer with 242 league goals and 355 in all competitions. His last, on 14 December 1963, came in a 4-0 win over Bristol City. In 1952/53 Rovers put together a twelve-match winning run beginning with a 2-1 home win over Leyton Orient on 18 October 1952, scoring 34 and conceding five across it.
The record attendance for a Rovers match is 62,787, for the FA Cup quarter-final against Newcastle United on 10 February 1951, but that was a goalless draw played at St James' Park and is not a ground record. The replay at Eastville drew 30,074. No published record attendance for the Memorial Stadium was found. No record appearance holder was established from the sources available.
The record fee received is £2.1m for Barry Hayles to Fulham. The record fee paid is £370,000 for Andy Tillson from Queens Park Rangers in 1992/93, a figure that has stood for more than thirty years and is one of the plainer measures of the club's scale.
Notable scorelines
Record victory: 15-1 against Weymouth in an FA Cup qualifying round on 17 November 1900. Record defeat: 0-12 against Luton Town on 13 April 1936, a match in which Joe Payne scored ten, still the record for individual goals in a Football League game. The most useful modern reference point is the 7-0 win over Scunthorpe United on 7 May 2022 that won promotion on goals scored.
Head-to-head notes
Bristol Rovers do not publish all-time head-to-head records on their own site, and no reliable all-time series records could be established for their 2026/27 League Two opponents. The one that matters most cannot be used this season in any case: Bristol City are in the Championship and Rovers are in League Two, so the Bristol derby cannot happen in the league in 2026/27, and no published all-time record for the fixture was found. The clubs last shared a division in 2023/24 and 2024/25 in League One. Note for a writer: Geoff Bradford's record-setting final goal came against Bristol City in a 4-0 win on 14 December 1963.
Several of this season's League Two opponents are clubs Rovers have played very recently, including Exeter City, Newport County, Cambridge United, Bradford City and Tranmere Rovers, all of whom have sold or bought players from Rovers in the current window. York City, the opening-day hosts, were promoted from the National League and no established record between the clubs was found.
Right now (2026/27)
Steve Evans is head coach, appointed 16 December 2025 and given a new two-year deal on 11 April 2026 after keeping Rovers comfortable in mid-table.
The summer has been a substantial rebuild, almost all of it completed on 1 July 2026. Jack Aitchison arrived from Exeter City on a free. Centre-backs Kofi Balmer, from Motherwell, and Ciaran Kelly, from Bradford City, both joined for undisclosed fees, as did right-back Tom James from Leyton Orient, winger Bobby Kamwa from Newport County, left-back Ben Purrington from Cambridge United and midfielder Richard Smallwood from Tranmere Rovers. Tommy Leigh had already joined on loan from Bradford City on 17 June for the season.
Departures have been steady. Joel Senior went to Tranmere Rovers on 19 June. Tom Lockyer left for Melbourne Victory and Luke Thomas was released, both on 30 June. Kamil Conteh joined Bromley on 9 July, goalkeeper Jed Ward went to Walsall on 10 July and Isaac Hutchinson to Doncaster Rovers on 20 July, all for undisclosed fees.
Pre-season has been productive: 3-0 at Weston-super-Mare on 7 July, 3-2 at Salisbury on 11 July, a 2-1 home defeat to Leicester City on 14 July, 1-1 at Portsmouth on 18 July, 2-2 at Forest Green Rovers on 21 July, 3-0 at Dundee on 29 July and 1-1 against Burnley under-21s on 31 July.
Rovers open competitively at home to Peterborough United in the Carabao Cup first round on Saturday 8 August 2026 at 3pm. The League Two season begins away at York City on Saturday 15 August 2026 at 3pm.
