The club
The Colorado Rapids were founded on June 6, 1995, and were one of the ten charter clubs that began play in Major League Soccer's inaugural 1996 season. The club was originally owned and operated by the Anschutz Corporation before ownership passed to Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which also controls the Denver Nuggets of the NBA, the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL and the Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League; the current owner is Stan Kroenke and the president and general manager is Pádraig Smith.
For their first eleven seasons the Rapids played home games in Denver, at Mile High Stadium from 1996 to 2001 and then at Invesco Field at Mile High from 2002 to 2006. The club moved to its own soccer-specific stadium, Dick's Sporting Goods Park, in Commerce City, a suburb northeast of Denver, when it opened on April 7, 2007, at a construction cost of 131 million dollars. Capacity is 18,062, expandable to 19,680. Honours and landmarks
Colorado Rapids are MLS Cup champions once, having beaten FC Dallas 2-1 after extra time in the 2010 final at BMO Field in Toronto on November 21, 2010, in front of 21,700 spectators; the match was refereed by Baldomero Toledo. Conor Casey equalised in the 57th minute after David Ferreira had put Dallas ahead in the 35th, and the winning goal came in the second period of extra time, in the 107th minute, when Macoumba Kandji's chipped cross struck Dallas defender George John and went in off him, the first own goal in MLS Cup history. Colorado had reached one earlier MLS Cup final, in 1997, losing 2-1 to D.C. United.
The club also reached the final of the U.S. Open Cup in 1999, losing 2-0 to the Rochester Raging Rhinos. Colorado have won the Rocky Mountain Cup, the annual trophy contested with Real Salt Lake, in 2005, 2006, 2013, 2015, 2020 and 2024, though as of the most recent standings the trophy is held by Real Salt Lake, who lead the all-time series 30 wins to 18 with 13 draws as of October 4, 2025.
