Como 1907
Also written as Como.
The club
Como 1907 are the football club of the city of Como, on the southern tip of Lake Como in Lombardy, Italy. This is Como 1907 of Lake Como — not to be confused with any other football club using the Como name; the club that plays in Serie A and hosts Champions League football in 2026/27 is this one, based at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on the lakeshore. The naming picture is genuinely complicated because the club has gone bankrupt and been refounded more than once. Como Foot-Ball Club was founded on 25 May 1907 by a committee that met at the Taroni bar on Via Cinque Giornate, and the club later merged with Esperia in 1927 to become Associazione Calcio Comense, winning the Coppa Volta that year. The original entity was relegated from Serie A in 2004 and declared bankrupt that December. A successor company, Calcio Como, was formed and admitted to the lower leagues, but a second bankruptcy followed in 2016/17; the Italian Football Federation rejected a bid to have a rival applicant, F.C. Como, ratified as the club's successor, and instead a new company, Como 1907 S.r.l., was admitted to Serie D for 2017/18. That company was sold in March 2017, for 237,000 euros, to Akosua Puni Essien, wife of the Ghanaian footballer Michael Essien, before being bought from her in April 2019 by the Indonesian Hartono brothers, Robert Budi Hartono and Michael Bambang Hartono, whose family wealth comes from the Djarum tobacco and electronics conglomerate. It was under Hartono ownership that the club climbed from Serie D back to Serie B and then, in 2024, to Serie A for the first time in 21 years. Cesc Fàbregas and Thierry Henry are minority stakeholders in the club, and the president is Mirwan Suwarso.
The club is nicknamed I Lariani ("those of Lake Como"), I Biancoblù ("the blue and whites") and I Voltiani, after the Como-born scientist Alessandro Volta; the shirts have historically been light blue and white, with royal blue also worn. Home matches are played at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, built on the orders of Benito Mussolini and opened on 30 July 1927 as one of the first examples of rationalist architecture built for football in Italy; Como have played there since 1928. The ground holds 13,602 and sits directly on the lakeshore, giving it a compact, lakeside setting that is unusual among Serie A grounds. The head coach is the Spaniard Cesc Fàbregas, the former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder, who took over as caretaker head coach in November 2023 while still working toward his UEFA coaching badges, was kept on through 2023/24 and was confirmed on a four-year contract in July 2024 after leading Como to promotion to Serie A.
Recent seasons
Como's post-bankruptcy climb ran through Serie D and Serie C before promotion to Serie B in 2015. They were promoted to Serie A in 2024 after finishing second in Serie B in 2023/24, ending a 21-year absence from the top flight. In their first season back, 2024/25, they stayed up in Serie A under Fàbregas. In 2025/26 they finished fourth in Serie A, their best league placing since finishing sixth in their debut top-flight season of 1949/50, securing qualification for the Champions League with a 1-0 away win at Hellas Verona on 10 May 2026 and closing the campaign with a 4-1 win over Cremonese on the final day. In the same season they reached the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia, equalling the club's best-ever run in the competition (previously reached in 1986), before losing 2-3 on aggregate to Inter Milan in the second leg on 10 February 2026.
Honours and landmarks
Como have never won Serie A or the Coppa Italia at senior national level. Their honours sit mostly in the lower divisions and pre-war regional competitions: they won the Coppa Volta in 1927 (beating Inter 3-0 in the semi-final and Genoa 1-0 in the final), the Coppa Italia Serie C in 1996/97 (beating Nocerina 4-2 on aggregate) and the Coppa Italia Serie D in 2007/08 (beating Colligiana 3-1 on aggregate), the latter alongside winning their Serie D group to earn promotion. Precise year-by-year lists of every Serie B and Serie C championship were not established from the sources read here. The club's landmark modern achievement is finishing fourth in Serie A in 2025/26, their highest finish since 1949/50 and the finish that delivered their first-ever qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
Notable scorelines
Como's record Serie A win came on 24 January 2026, a 6-0 home defeat of Torino, which equalled the club's biggest-ever competitive win, a 7-1 defeat of Cremonese in 1966/67. Beyond that, the club's all-time record win and record defeat in full were not established from the sources read here.
European record
Como's only recorded prior international appearance was in the Mitropa Cup in 1980/81; the club had never before played in a UEFA club competition proper. Detail on that 1980/81 campaign was not established from the sources read here. The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League is therefore Como's European debut in the competition and the first time the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia has hosted a match in Europe's premier club competition.
Quotes
Ahead of the Champions League opener, Cesc Fàbregas described the step up as "a new world," saying: "85% of the team has never played Champions League football, and also, how will we adapt to playing on a Wednesday night in one of the biggest stadiums in the world, where the intensity is so high... This is a new world, but again, we take it as an amazing experience, as an amazing opportunity for all of us together." On the emotional toll for his young squad he said: "The challenge is that when, for example, you go to Parc des Princes or to the Bernabeu, and you play, emotionally for the young players, it drains." On how Como would approach the bigger stage without changing their approach, he said: "We are very clear about how we want to play, what we want to do... if we lose, we lose. But we don't change our model, our principles, our way of playing," adding, "You play against the big boys, you need to play like a big boy... I only want the team to play with personality, with courage and not to feel small."
Right now (2026/27)
Cesc Fàbregas remains head coach. Como spent heavily over the summer of 2026, bringing in the defender Trevoh Chalobah for around 30 million euros from Chelsea, the midfielder Maxence Caqueret for around 15 million euros from Lyon, the midfielder Martin Baturina for around 18 million euros from Dinamo Zagreb, the winger Jesús Rodríguez for around 22.5 million euros from Real Betis, the forward Nicolas Kühn for around 19 million euros from Celtic, the forward Moise Kean on loan with an obligation to buy from Fiorentina, and the forward Álvaro Morata on a permanent transfer from AC Milan, with Anastasios Douvikas continuing as an established attacking option after finishing 2025/26 as the club's top scorer with 14 Serie A goals.
Como opened 2026/27 with seven points from their first three Serie A matches, unbeaten, including a 4-1 win away at Genoa on 4 September 2026. That form has come right before the club's first-ever Champions League match: Como host RB Leipzig at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on Thursday 10 September 2026, kicking off at 20:00 CEST (19:00 UTC), in the first match of the new league-phase format. It is a fixture with no prior competitive history between the two sides, and it marks the first time Como have played a European match at home in the club's 119-year history, and the first time the lakeside Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia has hosted Champions League football. There is a personal thread to the tie too: Como's forward Nicolas Kühn spent three years, from 2015 to 2018, in RB Leipzig's youth academy before his move to Como this summer. RB Leipzig arrive off the back of a 3-1 defeat away to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga. Full standings for the 2026/27 Serie A season beyond Como's own record, and the make-up of their Champions League league-phase schedule beyond the Leipzig match, were not confirmed from the sources read here.
