Cove Rangers

The club

Cove Rangers were founded in 1922 and play at Balmoral Stadium in Altens, on the southern edge of Aberdeen. The ground has been theirs since April 2015, when they left Allan Park in Cove Bay after 67 years, and it holds 2,602, of which 410 are seated, making it one of the smallest grounds in the senior Scottish game. The club are the Toonsers and play in red and white at home and black away.

Recent seasons

Cove spent their senior life in the Highland League before the pyramid opened. They won that division in 2018/19 with 93 points and went up through the play-offs into League Two. They won League Two at the first attempt in 2019/20, a season curtailed by the pandemic, finished third in League One in 2020/21 in another shortened campaign, and won League One in 2021/22. That was three promotions in four seasons and took them into the Championship for the first time.

It did not last. Cove finished bottom of the Championship in 2022/23 with 31 points and went straight back down. Paul Hartley, who had managed the club through the rise, had left for Hartlepool United on 3 June 2022 and returned on 5 January 2023, too late to save that season. They were fifth in League One in 2023/24 with 49 points, second in 2024/25 with 57, and then seventh in 2025/26 with 38 points from 36 games: 9 wins, 11 draws, 16 defeats, 41 goals scored and 44 conceded. Mitch Megginson was top scorer with 12 league goals and 17 in all competitions. They reached the fourth round of the Scottish Cup, beating Kelty Hearts on penalties after extra time, finished second in their League Cup group with seven points, and went out of the Challenge Cup in the round of 32, losing 2-1 to Partick Thistle on 16 December 2025. Crowds are small: the biggest home gate of the season was 811 for Falkirk on 19 July 2025 and the smallest 164 for Hibernian B on 23 September 2025. 2026/27 is their fourth consecutive season in League One.

Honours and landmarks

Cove won the Highland League seven times, in 2000/01, 2007/08, 2008/09, 2012/13, 2015/16, 2017/18 and 2018/19, and the Highland League Cup six times. They won the Scottish Qualifying Cup in 1990/91 and 2000/01. In the SPFL they have won League Two in 2019/20 and League One in 2021/22, both under Paul Hartley. Reaching the Championship in 2022/23 remains the highest level the club has played at.

Notable scorelines

No all-time record win or record defeat is established. The heaviest results found are recent and go against Cove: 5-0 at Dunfermline Athletic on 21 July 2026 and 4-0 at home to St Mirren on 18 July 2026, both in the Premier Sports Cup group stage. The most significant positive result in the club's history is the 2018/19 pyramid play-off that took them into the SPFL, and the League One title of 2021/22 that took them into the Championship.

The League One field this season is Airdrieonians, Alloa Athletic, Cove Rangers, East Fife, East Kilbride, Hamilton Academical, Montrose, Peterhead, Queen of the South and Ross County. Airdrieonians and Ross County have come down from the Championship, East Kilbride up from League Two as champions; Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Stenhousemuir went up, Kelty Hearts down. Cove shared League One last season with Alloa Athletic, East Fife, Hamilton Academical, Montrose, Peterhead and Queen of the South. The most recent stated meeting with a current opponent is the 3-2 win over East Kilbride in the Premier Sports Cup on 14 July 2026.

Right now (2026/27)

Paul Hartley remains manager, in his second spell since 5 January 2023, and agreed a three-year contract extension on 19 June 2026. Ryan Harrington, Reuben McAllister, Jack Robertson, Mikey Milnes, Cole Donaldson and Arron Darge all signed extensions.

The summer's damage was at the top of the pitch. Mitch Megginson, the club's leading scorer, and Blair Yule both joined Peterhead on 6 June 2026. Every incoming signing was a free transfer. Defender Victor Enem signed on 21 May while unattached, midfielder Max Barry from Peterhead on 26 May, midfielder Aaron Fraser and forward Tristan Stephen both from Aberdeen and defender Mark Souter from Inverurie Loco Works all on 20 June, forward Destiny Oladipo from East Fife on 21 June, forward Jordan White while unattached on 24 June, and forward Edimond Oppong, also unattached, on 12 July.

Pre-season was mixed: a 1-0 defeat to Aberdeen on 27 June, wins over Inverurie Locos (4-1) and Turriff United (1-0), a 2-2 draw with Huntly, and defeats to Inverness Caledonian Thistle (4-1) and St Johnstone (4-2). The Premier Sports Cup went badly. Cove beat East Kilbride 3-2 on 14 July, then lost 4-0 at home to St Mirren on 18 July, 5-0 at Dunfermline Athletic on 21 July and 2-0 to Dumbarton on 25 July, finishing bottom of Group C with three points and a goal difference wrecked by the two heavy defeats. St Mirren won the group. The League One season opens at home to Airdrieonians at Balmoral Stadium on 1 August 2026.
