Crewe Alexandra were formed in August 1877 as an offshoot of Crewe Alexandra Cricket Club and took their name from Princess Alexandra. They play in Crewe, Cheshire, at Gresty Road, known since a 2021 naming rights deal as the Mornflake Stadium, an all-seated ground holding 10,153 and occupied since 1906. They are nicknamed the Railwaymen after the town's rail works, and are commonly called the Alex. Home colours are red shirts, white shorts and red socks, worn since the late 1890s. Wikipedia records that supporters' fiercest rivalry is with Port Vale, who are back in the same division this season after relegation from League One. Crewe were founder members of Football League Division Two in 1892/93.
Recent seasons
Crewe went up to League One in 2019/20, when the season was curtailed by the pandemic and the table settled on points per game. They finished 12th in League One in 2020/21, their highest placing since relegation from the Championship in 2006, then were relegated in 2021/22, David Artell leaving in April 2022 after five years. Alex Morris took charge from April to November 2022 (24 games, five wins) and Lee Bell has been manager since. Crewe were 13th in League Two in 2022/23, sixth in 2023/24 and lost the play-off final 2-0 to Crawley Town at Wembley on 19 May 2024, 13th again in 2024/25, and 11th in 2025/26 with 67 points from 46 games (19 wins, 10 draws, 17 defeats, 64 goals for, 58 against). That is a fifth consecutive League Two season in 2026/27, which is also the club's 150th. Josh March was top scorer last season with 11 league goals and 15 in all. The cups were poor: first-round exits in both the EFL Cup, 3-1 at Stockport County, and the FA Cup, 2-1 at home to Doncaster Rovers, and out of the EFL Trophy in the last 32 to Stockport on penalties.
Honours and landmarks
Crewe have never won a league title. Their honours are the Welsh Cup in 1935/36 and 1936/37 and the Football League Trophy in 2012/13, beating Southend United 2-0 at Wembley. Promotions came in 1963, 1968, 1989, 1994, 1997 (play-off final against Brentford at Wembley), 2003, 2012 (play-offs) and 2020.
The academy is the club's defining asset. Dario Gradi managed for 24 years from 1983 and built the reputation; he was stripped of his MBE in August 2023 after being disbarred for failing to protect children from sexual abuse. Crewe were for years the only club outside the top two divisions with a Category Two academy, ranked ninth of 82 in England and Wales in 2021/22, but in April 2026 the club announced a restructuring taking it down to Category 3 from 2026/27. By 2015 player sales had generated over £20 million, largely reinvested in Gresty Road and the academy itself. Graduates include the England internationals Rob Jones, Danny Murphy, Seth Johnson and Dean Ashton, and both of the last two managers, Alex Morris and Lee Bell. The record fee received is £3 million, reached for Seth Johnson to Derby County and again for Dean Ashton to Norwich City; David Platt went to Aston Villa for £200,000 in February 1988 and Danny Murphy to Liverpool for £1.5 million. No record fee paid is published in the sources consulted, so that is not established.
Record appearances: Tommy Lowry, 482 between 1965 and 1977. Record goalscorer: Bert Swindells, 128 between 1927 and 1937. Most in a season: Terry Harkin, 34 in 1964/65. Club record unbeaten run: 18 matches, in 2012. Record attendance at Gresty Road is 20,000 against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup in 1960; the all-seater record is 10,092 against Manchester City on 12 March 2002.
Notable scorelines
Record league win: 8-0 against Rotherham United on 1 October 1932 in Division Three North. Biggest FA Cup win: 9-1 against Northwich Victoria on 16 November 1889. Record defeat: 2-13 at Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup on 30 January 1960, still one of the heaviest scorelines in the competition's history. Worst league defeat: 1-11 at Lincoln City on 29 September 1951 in Division Three North.
Head-to-head notes
Crewe do not publish all-time head-to-head records on their own site, and the two databases that do, 11v11 and worldfootball.net, both refused automated access. All-time records against this season's opponents are therefore not established, and last season's meetings are the usable substitute. Crewe did the double over Crawley Town (1-0 at home on 16 August 2025, 1-0 away on 7 February 2026) and Salford City (3-1 away on 2 August 2025, 1-0 at home on 6 April 2026), and took nothing from Walsall, losing 1-0 away on 26 December 2025 and 0-3 at home on 14 March 2026. Against Accrington Stanley, this season's cup opponents, Crewe won 2-0 at home on 9 August 2025 and lost 2-0 away on 3 April 2026. Their heaviest defeat of the season was 4-0 at Shrewsbury Town on 21 March 2026, having won the home meeting 3-1 on 8 November 2025. Results split home and away against the other eleven returning opponents. Crewe did not meet Port Vale, Northampton Town, Exeter City or Rotherham United last season, all four down from League One, nor York City or Rochdale, up from the National League.
Right now (2026/27)
Lee Bell remains manager, in charge since November 2022 and by the summer of 2026 approaching 200 matches in the job. Three players arrived: winger Jordan Gibson from Doncaster Rovers and midfielder Luke Offord from Milton Keynes Dons, both free on 1 July 2026, and attacking midfielder Joe White from Newcastle United for an undisclosed fee on 16 July 2026. Ten left when contracts expired on 30 June 2026: James Connolly (to Walsall), Max Sanders (to Notts County), Zac Williams (to Barnet), Oliver Armstrong, Omar Bogle, Charlie Finney, Jordan Hodkin, Louis Moult, Jack Powell and Shilow Tracey. Josh March, Luca Moore and Adrien Thibaut extended to June 2028 and Lewis Billington to June 2029.
In pre-season Crewe won 3-2 at Witton Albion on 11 July, drew 1-1 at home with Stoke City on 18 July, won 3-0 at AFC Telford on 21 July, lost 2-1 at home to Birmingham City on 25 July and lost 1-0 at Newcastle Town on 28 July, with Chester away on 1 August to come.
The competitive season had not begun as of 31 July 2026. Crewe are at home to Accrington Stanley in the first round of the EFL Cup on Saturday 8 August 2026, kick-off 15:00. The League Two campaign opens away at Crawley Town on 15 August, then Northampton Town at home on 22 August, Port Vale away on 29 August in a 12:30 kick-off picked for television, Walsall at home on 1 September and York City at home on 5 September. In the EFL Trophy they are in Northern Group B with Wigan Athletic, Blackpool and Aston Villa under-21s.
