The club
Debreceni Vasutas Sport Club were founded on 12 March 1902 as the sports club of the railway workers of Debrecen, Hungary's second city. They are universally known as Loki, a nickname that comes from the railway origins. Since 1 May 2014 they have played at the Nagyerdei Stadion, capacity 20,340, built on the site of the old ground in the Great Forest park; before that they used the Olah Gabor utcai Stadion, which held 12,500. The club were founded as Egyetertes Football Club. The current home kit is green and white and the change kit red and white.
Recent seasons
Debrecen were relegated from and promoted back to the Nemzeti Bajnoksag I during the early 2020s and have since settled as an established top-flight side without seriously challenging Ferencvaros. The season that matters here is 2025/26: Debrecen finished fourth in the twelve-team NB I, which was enough for a place in the second qualifying round of the 2026/27 Conference League. Donat Barany was top scorer with 12 league goals and 13 in all competitions. Average home league attendance was 7,215, with a season high of 16,876 against Ferencvaros on 5 April 2026. The Magyar Kupa run was brief: a 2-0 win away at third-tier VSC 2015 Veszprem in the round of 64, then a 2-1 extra-time home defeat to second-tier Budapest Honved in the round of 32. Sergio Navarro, appointed on 17 June 2025 in place of Nestor El Maestro, was the manager for that campaign. Honours and landmarks
Debrecen have won the Hungarian league seven times: 2004/05, 2005/06, 2006/07, 2008/09, 2009/10, 2011/12 and 2013/14. They have won the Magyar Kupa six times and the Hungarian Super Cup five times. European record
Debrecen's European history is defined by two seasons. In 2009/10 they came through three rounds of Champions League qualifying to reach the group stage, where they were drawn with Liverpool, Fiorentina and Lyon. They lost all six matches and finished fourth with no points. The home game against Fiorentina finished 3-4 and the away leg 2-5. Lyon won 4-0 both in Debrecen and in Lyon. Liverpool won 1-0 twice, home and away. The Anfield match was later named among the games examined in a match-fixing investigation. The Debrecen goalkeeper Vukasin Poleksic was banned for two years by UEFA for failing to report approaches made to him, and denied any attempt to influence the result, saying he played well and made a number of saves; no finding of fixing against the club was established from the sources read here.
In 2010/11 Debrecen reached the Europa League group stage, beating Litex Lovech 4-1 on aggregate in the play-off round, the first leg finishing 2-0 in Debrecen, and were drawn with PSV Eindhoven, Sampdoria and Metalist Kharkiv.

Gert Remmel is the head coach. The club announced the signing of a young Hungarian striker on 31 July 2026; the player's name, fee and contract length were not confirmed from the sources read here, and no other dated summer transfer business was established, so none is invented.
The domestic start has been poor and then steadied. Debrecen lost the NB I opener at home to Puskas Akademia 0-2 on 27 July 2026, then lost 4-2 away at Ujpest on 3 August. They won the derby against Nyiregyhaza 1-0 on 10 August 2026.
In Europe, Debrecen entered at the second qualifying round of the Conference League and drew Pyunik of Armenia. They won the first leg 1-0 at the Nagyerdei Stadion on 23 July 2026, Florian Cibla scoring in the 59th minute, and held out for a goalless draw at the Vazgen Sargsyan Stadium in Yerevan on 31 July to go through 1-0 on aggregate. Balazs Dzsudzsak hit the crossbar in stoppage time in Yerevan.
The tie they are in right now is the third qualifying round against FC Copenhagen, and the first leg went badly.
