Dumbarton

The club

Dumbarton were founded on 23 December 1872, which makes them one of the oldest clubs in Scotland. They play at The Rock, on Castle Road beneath Dumbarton Castle, a ground that opened on 2 December 2000 and holds 2,020. It has carried a long run of sponsor names, most recently becoming "The Rock sponsored by Marbill Coaches" in April 2026. The club are the Sons, short for Sons of the Rock, the name given to people born in the town. The home kit for 2026/27 is white with a black and gold band; the away strip is gold with black pinstripes. An artificial pitch, announced on 6 May 2026 and the first in the ground's history, was laid over the summer of 2026 and staged its first competitive football at the end of July.

Recent seasons

Dumbarton were a League One club for most of the last decade. They finished ninth in the 22-game 2020/21 campaign with 25 points, saving themselves by winning the relegation play-off 3-2 on aggregate against Edinburgh City. They were ninth again in 2021/22 with 34 points and this time lost the play-off, beaten 4-1 at Edinburgh City on 3 May 2022 and drawing the return 1-1, 5-2 on aggregate, and went down to League Two.

They responded with 62 points and second place in League Two in 2022/23 under Stephen Farrell, but were dismantled in the promotion play-off, losing 6-0 at Annan Athletic on 9 May 2023 before a goalless second leg. In 2023/24 they were fourth with 57 points and went up through the play-offs instead, drawing the final 2-2 at East Kilbride and winning the home leg 3-1 for a 5-3 aggregate.

The 2024/25 season in League One was the wreck. The club entered administration in November 2024 and were docked 15 points, finishing bottom of the division with 20 points and relegated straight back to League Two. Inverness Caledonian Thistle went into administration in the same division and season and took the same 15-point penalty. In 2025/26 Dumbarton served the balance of the sanction, a further five points, and finished ninth of ten with 35 points from 10 wins, 10 draws and 16 defeats, 47 goals scored and 61 conceded. East Kilbride won that division with 69 points. Edinburgh City finished bottom on 24 points after a 15-point insolvency deduction of their own and survived by beating Brora Rangers 3-1 on aggregate in the pyramid play-off.

Off the field, the club was rescued rather than repaired. Mario Lapointe, a Canadian businessman, was named preferred bidder on 29 May 2025 and completed the purchase on 24 June 2025 through a new company, with the old company going into liquidation. The five-point deduction carried across to the new entity as already planned.

Honours and landmarks

Dumbarton were the joint first champions of the Scottish Football League in 1890/91, level with Rangers on 29 points, a title-deciding play-off at Cathkin Park finishing 2-2 and the championship being shared. They won it outright the following season, 1891/92. They also won the Scottish Cup in 1882/83. Below the top flight they were second-tier champions in 1910/11 and 1971/72, when the division was called Division Two, Second Division champions in 1991/92, and Third Division champions in 2008/09. The club folded in 1901 and reformed in 1905. Record attendance is 18,001 against Raith Rovers at Boghead Park on 2 March 1957. The Rock's record is a full house of 2,020 for the visit of Rangers on 20 January 2024. Kenny Wilson scored 38 goals in the promotion season of 1971/72, a club record for a single campaign. Career appearance and goalscoring records, and record transfer fees, are not published anywhere that could be verified.

Notable scorelines

Record win: 13-2 against Kirkintilloch Central in the Scottish Cup on 1 September 1888. Record league defeat: 1-11 against Albion Rovers on 30 January 1926. They also lost 1-11 to Ayr United in the League Cup on 13 August 1952, and 0-8 to Kilmarnock in the same competition in 1958/59.

Head-to-head notes

No all-time head-to-head records against the other 2026/27 League Two clubs are published anywhere that could be established, and Dumbarton's own site does not carry them. Dumbarton met eight of their nine League Two opponents four times each in 2025/26; the exception is Kelty Hearts, who were in League One and finished bottom with 29 points to come down. Dumbarton also played Annan in the 2023 League One play-off semi-final and lost 6-0 on aggregate, and Edinburgh City in the 2021 and 2022 play-offs, winning the first and losing the second.

Right now (2026/27)

Frank McKeown was appointed manager on 5 December 2025, aged 39, his first job in management after seven years coaching. He played for Raith Rovers and then had a long career as a defender at Stranraer. He was Mario Lapointe's appointment.

The squad turned over heavily. Nine departures were confirmed on 6 May 2026. Connor Campbell joined from Rangers on a two-year deal on 23 May, Scott Tomlinson returned permanently from Ayr United on 24 May, and Kristian Webster signed a two-year extension on 26 May. Michael Doyle signed a new one-year deal and Tommy Robson arrived on a two-year contract on 2 June; Doyle was confirmed as captain on 19 June. Lewis Spence signed for two years and Scott Honeyman extended for one on 13 June. David Craig came from Ayr United on 9 July, Aidan Rice returned on loan from Celtic on 14 July, and on 18 July Josiah Sowa joined on a season-long loan from Queen's Park and goalkeeper Jack McConnell signed. Ryan Blair, at the club since summer 2022, left for Brechin City at the end of July. No fees were published for any of these moves.

Dumbarton were drawn in Premier Sports Cup Group C and finished fourth of five with three points. They lost 0-4 at home to St Mirren on 11 July, 4-1 at Dunfermline Athletic on 14 July and 5-3 at East Kilbride on 18 July, then beat Cove Rangers 2-0 on 25 July, that last game staged at the Reigart Stadium while the new pitch was being finished. St Mirren and Dunfermline went through on nine points each. The league campaign opens away to Stirling Albion on Saturday 1 August 2026 at 3pm.
