The club

Dundee were founded in 1893 out of a merger of two existing city sides, Dundee East End and Dundee Our Boys, and joined the Scottish League in Division One that same year. They play at Dens Park on Sandeman Street in Dundee, capacity 11,775. The club are known as the Dark Blues or simply the Dee, after the dark blue they have always played in. Dens Park sits roughly 200 yards from Tannadice Park, home of Dundee United, the closest pair of senior grounds in Britain. The club went into administration twice in the modern era, in 2003 and again in 2010.

Recent seasons

Dundee finished third in the Championship in 2019/20, the season curtailed by the pandemic, then second in 2020/21 on 45 points, which took them up through the play-offs. The Premiership return lasted one year: 12th in 2021/22 on 29 points and straight back down. They won the Championship at the first attempt in 2022/23 under Gary Bowyer, 63 points from 17 wins, 12 draws and seven defeats. Back in the top flight they were sixth in 2023/24 on 42 points, then tenth in 2024/25 on 41. Tony Docherty was dismissed after that season, on 19 May 2025, and Steven Pressley took over as head coach on 2 June 2025. Under Pressley, Dundee finished eighth in 2025/26 with 42 points from 38 games, 11 wins, nine draws and 18 defeats, 42 goals scored and 61 conceded. They reached the fifth round of the Scottish Cup, beating Kilmarnock 2-1 in the fourth before losing 2-1 to Celtic after extra time, Celtic having equalised with the last kick of normal time. They went out of the League Cup at the group stage, third in their group on six points after losing to both Airdrieonians and Alloa Athletic.

Honours and landmarks

Dundee are Scottish champions once, in 1961/62 under Bob Shankly. They won the Scottish Cup in 1909/10 and the League Cup three times, in 1951/52, 1952/53 and 1973/74. Second-tier titles came in 1946/47 (Division B), 1978/79 and 1991/92 (First Division), 1997/98 (First Division), 2013/14 and 2022/23. They won the Challenge Cup in 1990/91 and 2009/10.

The 1961/62 title fed into the club's defining campaign. In the 1962/63 European Cup they beat 1. FC Köln 8-1 at Dens Park in the preliminary round and held on despite losing the return 4-0, then beat Sporting CP 4-2 on aggregate after losing the away leg 1-0, and Anderlecht 6-2, winning 4-1 in Brussels on 6 March 1963. In the semi-final AC Milan won 5-1 in Milan on 24 April 1963; Dundee won the Dens Park return 1-0 on 1 May but went out 5-2. They also reached the semi-finals of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1967/68, losing to Leeds United.

Record home attendance is 43,024 against Rangers on 7 February 1953. The highest crowd for any Dundee match is the 136,495 who watched the 1952 Scottish Cup final against Motherwell. Best average home gate was 24,532 in 1948/49. Doug Cowie holds the appearance record with 445 between 1945 and 1961; Alan Gilzean is the leading league scorer on 113. Alex Hamilton is the most-capped player, 24 for Scotland. Record fee paid is £600,000 for Fabián Caballero. Wikipedia lists the record fee received as £1,500,000 for Jack Hendry to Celtic, but the £2,000,000 reported for Luke Graham to Stoke City on 2 July 2026 would exceed it; treat the Graham figure as the current record.

Notable scorelines

Record victory is 10-0, achieved twice in 1947, against Alloa Athletic and against Dunfermline Athletic. Record defeat is 0-11 at Celtic on 26 October 1895. In the Dundee derby the biggest wins are Dundee 5-0 Dundee United on 28 August 1926 and Dundee United 5-0 Dundee on 11 September 1965; the highest-scoring meeting was United's 6-2 win on 30 August 2019 in the Championship. United beat Dundee 3-0 in the 1980 League Cup final on 6 December 1980, a final played at Dens Park.

The all-time competitive derby record, as at 26 April 2026, is Dundee United 84 wins, Dundee 52, with 46 draws from 182 meetings. The three most recent derbies all went United's way or level: United 1-0 on 3 January 2026, 2-2 at Dens Park on 15 March 2026, and United 3-0 on 26 April 2026. No published all-time head-to-head record could be established for Aberdeen, Celtic, Falkirk, Heart of Midlothian, Hibernian, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Rangers, St Johnstone or St Mirren; the usual aggregator (11v11) refused automated access, as did the club's own site for most pages beyond the front page.

Departures: Billy Koumetio to Charlton Athletic for £500,000 on 1 July, Luke Graham to Stoke City for £2,000,000 on 2 July, Paul Digby released by mutual consent to Colchester United on 7 July, Emile Acquah to Notts County for an undisclosed fee on 8 July, and Aaron Donnelly on loan to Dunfermline Athletic on 30 July.

The Premier Sports Cup group stage went well. Dundee beat Airdrieonians 4-2 at home on 11 July, won 5-0 at Annan Athletic on 14 July, drew 1-1 at Ross County on 21 July and lost the shootout 7-6, then beat Clyde 4-0 at Dens Park on 25 July. Fourteen goals scored and three conceded left them second in Group D on ten points behind Ross County on 11, and they went through as one of the three best runners-up. They are away to Aberdeen at Pittodrie in the second round on 15 August 2026.

The league campaign opens away to Celtic at Celtic Park on Monday 3 August 2026, 7.30pm, with Aberdeen at Dens Park on 8 August. For context, Dundee's 2-0 home win over Celtic in October 2025 was their first league win against the champions since May 2001.
