Elgin City
Also written as Elgin.
The club
Elgin City were founded on 10 August 1893 by the merger of two local clubs and play at Borough Briggs in Elgin, Moray. The ground holds 4,520, of which 478 are seated, and is the most northerly senior league ground in the United Kingdom. The club are the Black and Whites and play in black and white striped shirts with black shorts.
Elgin spent more than a century in the Highland League and were granted Scottish Football League status in 2000, when the SPL expanded to twelve clubs and left two places to be filled at the bottom of the pyramid. Peterhead came up from the Highland League with them.
Recent seasons
Six seasons in League Two, all of them in the bottom half or thereabouts. Elgin finished third in 2020/21 with 38 points from a Covid-shortened 27 games, level with Edinburgh City and behind on goal difference. They were ninth in 2021/22 with 37 points from nine wins, ninth again in 2022/23 with 40, and seventh in 2023/24 with 40. The best of the run was 2024/25: fourth with 55 points, one behind Edinburgh City, and a place in the League One play-offs. Last season they slipped back to sixth with 44 points from 11 wins, 11 draws and 14 defeats, and a goal difference of minus four. Kane Hester scored 18 in the 2022/23 season.
The dugout has been unstable. Gavin Price managed from October 2017 to April 2023, and since then the club has had Ross Draper, Barry Smith, Allan Hale and now Stefan Laird, five men in three years.
Honours and landmarks
Elgin were Highland League champions 14 times: 1931/32, 1934/35, 1952/53, 1955/56, 1959/60, 1960/61, 1962/63, 1964/65, 1965/66, 1967/68, 1968/69, 1969/70, 1973/74 and 1989/90. They have won the North of Scotland Cup 18 times, from 1898/99 through to 2003/04, and the Scottish Qualifying Cup (North) seven times, in 1935/36, 1937/38, 1959/60, 1964/65, 1967/68, 1970/71 and 1989/90. They have won nothing in the Scottish Professional Football League since election in 2000.
The best run in the club's history came in 1968, when Elgin reached the Scottish Cup quarter-finals, further than any Highland League club has ever gone in the competition. Record home attendance is 12,608 against Arbroath at Borough Briggs on 17 February 1968, during that run. The record crowd for an Elgin away match is 46,406 at Ibrox against Rangers on 5 January 2013, when Rangers were serving their season in the Third Division. Gerry Graham is the club's record goalscorer with 371, and Brian Cameron holds the league appearance record with 342.
Notable scorelines
Record victory: 18-1 against Brora Rangers in the North of Scotland Cup on 6 February 1960. Record defeat: 1-14 against Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Cup on 4 February 1939.
Head-to-head notes
Published all-time records are thin for a club with this much of its history outside the league system. The one that could be established is against Edinburgh City, from the Fitbastats Edinburgh City archive covering 1997/98 onward: 32 played, Elgin 9, Edinburgh City 13, 10 draws. The two open the season against each other at Meadowbank. No published all-time record could be found against Annan Athletic, Clyde, Dumbarton, Forfar Athletic, Kelty Hearts, Stirling Albion, Stranraer or The Spartans, all of whom Elgin have played repeatedly in League Two but for whom no archive publishes a running total.
Right now (2026/27)
Stefan Laird was appointed manager on 26 May 2026, replacing Allan Hale, who left on 11 May 2026 after two and a half years in charge. Laird has not yet taken charge of a league match.
The club announced a cooperation agreement with Ross County for 2026/27 on 29 July 2026, replacing the arrangement they had with Aberdeen, and took forward Calum Brown and midfielder Lewis MacKay on season-long loans as part of it. The club's news page also lists Aberdeen loan arrivals for midfielder Aaron Cummings and forward Bradley Chikomo dated 8 July, which sits awkwardly with the statement that the Aberdeen partnership belonged to the previous season; a reviewer should check whether those two are 2026 or 2025 signings. No permanent summer transfers, in or out, could be established.
The Premier Sports Cup went badly. Elgin were drawn in Group H with Kilmarnock, Hamilton Academical, Raith Rovers and Peterhead, lost all four matches, conceded 12 goals and finished bottom with no points. The one result that could be pinned to a date is the opener, a 3-1 defeat at Raith Rovers on 11 July 2026; the other three, against Hamilton, Kilmarnock and Peterhead, were played across the rest of July but the individual scores and dates could not be established, as the Wikipedia group-stage listing is truncated before Group H and the SPFL club pages return 403.
The League Two season begins away to Edinburgh City on Saturday 1 August 2026.
