The club

Floriana Football Club represent the town of Floriana, just outside Valletta, and are nicknamed Tal-Irish and Il-Greens. The club's own history traces to 1894, when the football ground was inaugurated in a ceremony officiated by Queen Alexandra, and Wikipedia's article on the club describes Floriana as one of the two oldest clubs in Malta alongside St. George's F.C. That claim is not as clean as it sounds: St. George's F.C., formed in Cospicua in 1890 from the merger of three earlier clubs (Santa Margherita, St Andrews and St George's), is described on its own page as "believed to be the oldest association football club in Malta," and that same article notes the oldest surviving photograph of the club was taken in 1894 after a match in which St. George's beat Floriana. The two founding dates and the "oldest club" claim were not fully reconciled from the sources read here, and should be read as a genuine historical dispute rather than a settled fact either way.

On the possibility of confusion with another Maltese club: there is no other senior Maltese club currently or historically named Floriana, and a check of Malta's club list turned up nothing plausibly confusable with the name. St. George's F.C. of Cospicua, mentioned above, now plays in the Maltese National Amateur League II and is a distinct club with no naming overlap; the "St Andrews" that merged into St. George's in 1890 is likewise a separate, defunct entity with no connection to Floriana. Floriana should also not be confused with the English non-league side once called St George's F.C. of Aston, Birmingham (now Birmingham St George's F.C.), which is an entirely different country and club that share no relationship with the Maltese sides at all; that clash of names appears only because Wikipedia hosts articles for a "St George's F.C." on both islands.

Floriana's playing colours were originally green and red quartered shirts; they switched to green-and-white vertical stripes in 1905 after matches against the Royal Dublin Fusiliers garrison side, which also explains the Tal-Irish nickname. The club badge has carried a lion since 1936, under the Latin motto Ex Ludis Virtus ("virtue out of the game"). Like most Maltese clubs, Floriana do not own a fixed home ground; matches are played at the national venues in Ta' Qali, principally the Centenary Stadium and the National Stadium, and historically at the Empire Stadium in Gżira. Recent seasons

Floriana finished second in the 2021/22 top-six phase with 51 points from 27 matches (14 wins, 9 draws, 4 losses, 38 goals for, 21 against), as Hibernians took a 13th title. They dropped to seventh in 2022/23 with 37 points from 26 games as Ħamrun Spartans won a ninth title with 69 points. In 2023/24 Floriana were runners-up again, 57 points from 26 matches (18 wins, 3 draws, 5 losses, 53 for, 19 against), five points behind a dominant Ħamrun Spartans side that took a tenth title with 62 points. Malta's league uses a split format in which the 12 teams play each other once, split into top-six and bottom-six groups, and 2024/25 illustrated how misleading the aggregate table can be: Floriana topped it with 62 points (17 wins, 11 draws, 4 losses, 48 for, 23 against), yet the championship went to a Final Four knockout between the Opening and Closing Round winners and runners-up, and Ħamrun Spartans beat Birkirkara 1-0 in the final on 10 May 2025 to take an 11th title after eliminating Floriana on penalties, 4-2, following a 0-0 semi-final draw on 5 May 2025. In 2025/26 Floriana finally converted the aggregate lead into the title itself, finishing top with 70 points from 32 matches, 21 wins, 7 draws and 4 losses, 51 goals scored and 27 conceded, eight points clear of second-placed Ħamrun Spartans, over a season that ran from 16 August 2025 to 16 May 2026.

Honours and landmarks

Floriana are Malta's record league champions with 27 titles, most recently in 2025/26 and before that in 2019/20; earlier titles run back through 1992/93, 1976/77, 1974/75, 1972/73, 1969/70, 1967/68, 1961/62, 1957/58, 1954/55, 1952/53, 1951/52, 1950/51, 1949/50, 1936/37, 1934/35, 1930/31, 1928/29, 1927/28, 1926/27, 1924/25, 1921/22, 1920/21, 1912/13, 1911/12 and 1909/10. The 2019/20 title had an unusual route: the season was suspended because of the Covid-19 pandemic on 18 May 2020, and Floriana were awarded the championship by an MFA council vote on 25 May 2020 based on their position at suspension, a title that at the time equalled Sliema Wanderers' all-time record of 26; the 2025/26 title subsequently put Floriana clear on their own at 27. In the FA Trophy, Floriana have won 21 times, most recently in 2021/22, with other wins spread from 1937/38 through 2016/17; they have also won the Super Cup twice and a clutch of older domestic cups including the Cassar Cup (10 times), the Independence Cup (7) and the Sons of Malta Cup (6), for a total the club counts as 108 major honours.

The most significant continental landmark is 1993/94, when Floriana became the only Maltese club to progress from the qualifying rounds into the first round proper of the European Cup / Champions League, beating Ekranas of Lithuania 2-1 on aggregate (1-0 away, 1-0 at home) before losing 2-0 on aggregate to Porto.

Notable scorelines

Floriana's heaviest recorded European defeat is a 15-4 aggregate loss to Újpest Dózsa in the 1961/62 European Cup Winners' Cup preliminary round: 2-5 at home in Gżira's Empire Stadium on 17 September 1961, then 2-10 away at the Népstadion in Budapest on 27 September, with the Hungarian forward János Göröcs among the home side's scorers. Their best-remembered European win is a 4-3 aggregate victory over Aberystwyth Town of Wales in the first round of the 1999 UEFA Intertoto Cup, coming from a 2-2 draw away to win 2-1 at home. In the 2026/27 Champions League first qualifying round Floriana beat Shamrock Rovers 2-0 at the Centenary Stadium before losing 5-1 in Dublin, going out 5-3 on aggregate. Floriana entered European competition for the first time in the Cup Winners' Cup of 1961/62 and were eliminated in the preliminary round by Újpest Dózsa as above. Their best run domestically translated to European football came in 1993/94, when as Maltese champions they beat Ekranas of Lithuania 2-1 on aggregate in the preliminary round before losing 2-0 on aggregate to Porto in the first round proper, the only time a Maltese club has gone that far in the competition. Floriana's oldest rivalry is with St. George's F.C., dating to the earliest days of Maltese football around 1890, before an "Old Firm" rivalry with Sliema Wanderers developed and peaked from 1922 into the late 1970s, a period in which the two clubs dominated the domestic game and, according to the club's own historical account, direct conflict between the two sets of supporters was common. The current fixture most often described as Malta's biggest is against neighbouring Valletta F.C., a derby the sources attribute to the geographic closeness of the two towns as much as to the historical success of both clubs. The Floriana-Sliema rivalry has been fought out repeatedly in FA Trophy finals: their 2023/24 meeting was their 16th FA Trophy final against each other since 1935, and Floriana had previously won nine of those finals, including a 2-0 win on 20 May 2017 at the Ta' Qali National Stadium in front of 3,750, Enzo Adrian Ruiz scoring in the 4th minute and Clyde Borg in the 90+3rd, with Glen Tonna refereeing. Right now (2026/27)

Daniel Portela remains the head coach. Floriana entered the 2026/27 Champions League as Maltese champions via the Champions Path. In the first qualifying round they beat Shamrock Rovers of Ireland 2-0 at home at the Centenary Stadium, Ta' Qali, on 7 July 2026, Murić scoring in first-half stoppage time and Jah adding a second in the 79th minute in front of 1,215, with Benjamin Brand of Germany refereeing. The return in Dublin on 14 July 2026 was lost 5-1 in front of 5,466 at Tallaght Stadium, Gudelj scoring Floriana's goal in the 13th minute, and Shamrock Rovers went through 5-3 on aggregate with Joakim Östling of Sweden the referee.

That defeat dropped Floriana into the Conference League at the second qualifying round of the Champions Path, where they were drawn against FC Drita of Kosovo. The first leg at the Centenary Stadium on 21 July 2026 finished 1-1, Amar Drina equalising in the 90+9th minute after Liridon Balaj had put Drita ahead in the 90+4th. The second leg at the Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina on 28 July 2026 went to extra time and finished 2-1 to Drita, Paul Mbong having put Floriana ahead in the 40th minute before Jorgo Pëllumbi levelled in the 88th and an own goal from Kauan Alexandre in the 91st completed the turnaround in front of 2,370, Horațiu Feșnic of Romania refereeing; Drita went through 3-2 on aggregate, ending Floriana's European campaign for the season at the second qualifying round stage.

Domestically, Floriana went out of the 2025/26 FA Trophy at the round of 16 to Żabbar St. Patrick on penalties, 4-2 after a 0-0 draw, and that competition's 2025/26 final was won by Valletta, who beat Gżira United 2-1 on 23 May 2026 at Ta' Qali.
