The club
GAIS stands for Göteborgs Atlet- och Idrottssällskap, the Gothenburg Athlete and Athletics Association, founded on 11 March 1894 at Edlunds Café in the city; the football department followed in 1897. GAIS is not IFK Goteborg and not BK Hacken, the other two clubs commonly associated with Gothenburg football — it is the city's third major club, with a separate history, its own support base and, historically, working-class roots that set it apart from Örgryte IS's more upper-class origins. GAIS play in green and black striped shirts with white shorts and black socks, and are nicknamed Makrillarna (the Mackerels), Grönsvart (Green-Black) and Atleterna (the Athletes); in the 1950s the side wore green shirts with white sleeves, a kit remembered as the "Arsenal kit".
