Gornik Zabrze

The club

Gornik Zabrze were founded on 14 December 1948 out of a merger of four sports clubs in the Silesian mining town of Zabrze. They play at the Arena Zabrze, capacity 28,236. They are known as Trojkolorowi, the Tri-Colours, and as Gornicy, the Miners, which is the older and more literal name: the club was built on the coal industry that surrounded it. The kits are white or dark blue and red.

Recent seasons

The sources read here did not establish Gornik's Ekstraklasa finishes for 2021/22 through 2024/25, and they should not be guessed at. What is confirmed is 2025/26, which was the club's best season in a very long time. Gornik finished second with 56 points from 16 wins, 8 draws and 10 defeats, scoring 50 and conceding 38. They were level on points with Jagiellonia Bialystok in third and separated by head-to-head record, and four behind champions Lech Poznan on 60. In the same season they won the Polish Cup, their first since 1972.

Honours and landmarks

Gornik have won the Polish championship fourteen times, in 1957, 1959, 1961, 1962/63, 1963/64, 1964/65, 1965/66, 1966/67, 1970/71, 1971/72, 1984/85, 1985/86, 1986/87 and 1987/88. That is a national record. They have won the Polish Cup seven times, in 1964/65, 1967/68, 1968/69, 1969/70, 1970/71, 1971/72 and 2025/26. They hold the Polish records for five consecutive championships, from 1963 to 1967, and five consecutive cups, from 1968 to 1972. Between the 1988 title and the 2026 cup there was nothing at all, which is the context for how much last season meant.

Notable scorelines

Record victory: 9-0, achieved twice, against Cracovia in 1962 and against Pogon Szczecin in 2002/03. A record defeat was not confirmed from the sources read here.

European record

The defining night is the 1969/70 European Cup Winners' Cup final, which Gornik lost 1-2 to Manchester City in Vienna. It remains the only European final reached by a Polish club side from that era of Gornik's dominance. The route there was serious: they beat Olympiacos, Rangers, Levski Sofia and Roma. The date of the final was not confirmed from the sources read here.

More recently the record is thin. Gornik were in the 2018/19 Europa League qualifying rounds and were eliminated by Trencin of Slovakia. Other campaigns were not detailed in the sources read here.

The 2026/27 run began in the Champions League. As Ekstraklasa runners-up Gornik entered the League Path second qualifying round against Fenerbahce, and lost 0-1 at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on 21 July 2026, Anderson Talisca scoring on 37 minutes in front of 38,604. The return at the Arena Zabrze on 29 July drew 28,499 and finished 1-1: Talisca converted a penalty on 12 minutes and Michal Sacek equalised deep into first-half stoppage time on 45+10. Fenerbahce went through 2-1 on aggregate, and Gornik dropped into the Europa League third qualifying round.

Right now (2026/27)

Michal Gasparik has been the manager since 1 July 2025. The other name that matters is Lukas Podolski, who retired as a player on 1 July 2026 after several seasons at the club. He is also reported to have taken an ownership stake in Gornik during 2026, but the size of that stake and the date it was agreed were not confirmed from the sources read here and are not stated.

Arrivals: Wiktor Nowak returned from a loan at Wisla Plock on 30 June, Bruno Durdov joined from Hajduk Split for an undisclosed fee on 1 July, Peter Gonzalez from Getafe for an undisclosed fee on 11 July, and Maximilian Dietz from Greuther Furth for an undisclosed fee on 17 July. Departures: Marcel Lubik went back to Augsburg from loan on 30 June; Patrik Hellebrand joined Korona Kielce on 1 July; Pawel Olkowski joined GKS Tychy on 1 July; Borislav Rupanov went on loan to Uniao Leiria on 3 July; and Lukas Ambros joined Anderlecht on 10 July, all for undisclosed fees. The season page also lists Wiktor Nowak as leaving for Slavia Prague on 1 July, on the same day as his loan return is recorded; that apparent contradiction is reported as it was read and has not been resolved.

The Ekstraklasa season opened on 25 July 2026 with a 2-1 home win over Slask Wroclaw, the goals coming from a Matsenko own goal and Yvan Ikia Dimi.

The tie they are in right now is the Europa League third qualifying round against Ferencvaros. The first leg was in Budapest on 5 August 2026 and Gornik lost 1-0; the scorer was not confirmed from the sources read here. The second leg is at the Arena Zabrze on 13 August 2026, a one-goal deficit and a full house likely. Losing it would not end their European season: a defeat in this round drops a club into the Conference League play-off round.
