Greenock Morton

The club
Morton were founded in 1874 and have played at Cappielow Park in Greenock, on the south bank of the Clyde, since 1879. The ground holds 11,589, of which 5,741 are seated, which makes it one of the larger stadiums in the Scottish Championship. The club competed as Morton FC for most of their history and formally became Greenock Morton in 1994. They are known as the Ton and play in blue and white hooped shirts with white shorts and socks.
Recent seasons
Morton have been a Championship club throughout this period and have spent almost all of it in the bottom half. They finished ninth of ten in the Covid-shortened 2020/21 season with 29 points from 27 games, seventh in 2021/22 with 40, and fifth in 2022/23 with 57, which was much their best of the run and left them three points off the play-off places in a season where four clubs finished within a point of each other. They were fifth again in 2023/24 with 45 points, then eighth in 2024/25 and eighth again in 2025/26 with 38 points from 36 games, 8 wins, 14 draws and 14 defeats, 36 goals scored and 52 conceded. Fourteen draws was the second highest in the division. St Johnstone won the 2025/26 title on 77 points and Ross County went down.
Honours and landmarks
The Scottish Cup of 1921/22 is the club's one major national trophy, won with a 1-0 defeat of Rangers. Morton hold ten league championships: Division Two in 1949/50, 1963/64 and 1966/67, the First Division in 1977/78, 1983/84 and 1986/87, the Second Division in 1994/95 and 2006/07, the Third Division in 2002/03 and League One in 2014/15. Record attendance is 23,500 against Celtic in 1922, a figure that reflects how much bigger a club Morton were in that era. Derek Collins holds the appearance record with 534. Allan McGraw is the record league scorer with 117 and later managed the club. The record fee paid is around £250,000 for Janne Lindberg; the record fee received is £500,000 for Derek Lilley to Leeds United.
Notable scorelines
Record victory: 21-0 against Howwood in the Renfrewshire Cup in 1886/87. Record defeat: 1-10, suffered twice, against Port Glasgow Athletic on 5 May 1894 and against St Bernard's on 14 October 1933.

No published all-time record was established for any of Morton's 2026/27 Championship opponents: Arbroath, Ayr United, Dunfermline Athletic, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Livingston, Partick Thistle, Queen's Park, Raith Rovers or Stenhousemuir. Three of those are new to the division: Inverness and Stenhousemuir promoted from League One, Livingston relegated from the Premiership. Morton and Partick Thistle have shared the Championship in every season since 2021/22, Partick finishing above them each time, and Partick were runners-up on 66 points last season. Morton's only 2026/27 meeting so far with a club they will play again was in the League Cup, where Inverness Caledonian Thistle won 1-0 at Cappielow.

Ian Murray was appointed first-team manager on 2 January 2026 on a contract to June 2027, taking over from caretaker Gary Miller. Murray had previously managed Dumbarton, St Mirren, Airdrieonians and Raith Rovers, taking Raith to the Championship runners-up spot in 2023/24, and won six Scotland caps as a player with Hibernian, Rangers and Norwich City.
The retained list was published on 25 May 2026. Sam Murdoch, Kris Moore, Jackson Longridge, Cammy Ballantyne, Kerr Robertson, Eamonn Brophy, Michael O'Halloran and Louie Murphy were under contract or retained; Aaron Comrie, Zak Delaney, Grant Gillespie, Cameron Blues, Iain Wilson, Michael Garrity, Owen Moffat and Cammy MacPherson were in discussions. Fergus Owens, Ali Crawford, Kian Taylor, Nathan Shaw and Zak McKay departed, and loan players James Storer, Arron Lyall, Reuben Lopata-White, Curtis Main and Murray Johnson returned to their parent clubs. Incoming business has been light. Eighteen-year-old midfielder Joey O'Toole signed on 9 July 2026 after a trial period, and goalkeeper Elyh Harrison, 20, joined on a season-long loan from Manchester United on 28 July. Off the field, Kevin Cannon arrived as head groundsman on 16 July and kitman Gary Johnstone left for a Premiership club on 28 July.
The start to the season was as bad as a League Cup group stage can be. Morton lost all four Group F matches and did not score: 0-2 away to East Fife, 0-3 away to St Johnstone, 0-1 at home to Inverness Caledonian Thistle and 0-1 at home to Linlithgow Rose, a non-league entrant. They finished bottom of the group with no points and a goal difference of minus seven. Inverness won the group.
The Championship campaign opens at home to Partick Thistle on Saturday 1 August 2026. The club issued a statement on supporter behaviour on 31 July, the day before the match.
