Ħamrun Spartans Football Club
Also written as Hamrun.
The club
Ħamrun Spartans were founded in 1907 in the town of Ħamrun, Malta. The club went through a period of decline in the 1920s and 1930s as players left, and a successor side called Ħamrun Liberty formed before the Spartans name and identity returned with promotion back to the First Division in 1946/47. They play at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, named for a former club president who led it through its successful 1980s spell, which holds 2,000. The home kit is black and red, the away kit white. The current manager is the Italian Giacomo Modica.
The feed calls this club "Hamrun"; its full name is Ħamrun Spartans. It is not Spartans Football Club of Edinburgh, Scotland, a separate club that shares the "Spartans" name and is also covered in this corpus; the two have no connection beyond the nickname. It is also not any of Malta's other leading clubs, Valletta, Floriana, Sliema Wanderers, Birkirkara or Hibernians, all long-established rivals in the same small league who are sometimes lumped together by outsiders unfamiliar with Maltese football.
Recent seasons
Ħamrun won the Maltese Premier League in 2020/21, 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25, their eighth through eleventh titles. That run of four championships in five seasons, including three in a row, made them the dominant club in Malta over that period. As of the 2026/27 season the club sat third of twelve in the Maltese top flight.
Honours and landmarks
Ħamrun have won the Maltese league eleven times: 1913/14, 1917/18, 1946/47, 1982/83, 1986/87, 1987/88, 1990/91, 2020/21, 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25. Reaching a tenth title in 2024 earned the club "golden star" status under Maltese football's award system for the milestone. They have won the Maltese FA Trophy six times, in 1982/83, 1983/84, 1986/87, 1987/88, 1988/89 and 1991/92, and the Maltese Super Cup seven times, in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 2023 and 2024.
The club's defining landmark is European rather than domestic: in 2025/26 Ħamrun became the first Maltese club to reach the league phase of a UEFA club competition, playing in the Conference League league phase that season.
Notable scorelines
In the 2025/26 Conference League league phase, Ħamrun beat Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar 3-1, their first win at that level of European competition. In qualifying that same season they overcame Žalgiris of Lithuania on penalties, 2-2 on aggregate and 11-10 on spot kicks, in the Champions League first qualifying round. On the heavier side, Ħamrun have lost 0-10 away to Benfica in the 1991/92 European Cup and 0-7 away to Rapid Wien in the 1987/88 European Cup; more recently they lost 0-6 away to Maccabi Haifa in 2023/24 Champions League qualifying and 0-6 away to Dynamo Kyiv in 2025/26. The club's biggest and heaviest results in Maltese domestic football were not established from the sources read here.
European record
Ħamrun's European history stretches back to 1983/84, when they lost 0-6 on aggregate to Dundee United in the European Cup. Heavy early exits followed throughout the 1980s and 1990s: Dynamo Moscow, Dinamo Tirana, 17 Nëntori, Real Valladolid, Benfica and Maribor all eliminated them by wide margins.
The modern era has been far stronger. In 2022/23 Ħamrun reached a Conference League play-off round for the first time, beating Alashkert, Velež Mostar and Levski Sofia in the earlier rounds before losing 7-4 on aggregate to Partizan. In 2023/24 they beat Dinamo Tbilisi 3-1 before losing 8-2 on aggregate to Ferencváros. In 2024/25 they lost to Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar on penalties in Champions League first qualifying after a 1-1 aggregate draw, then to Ballkani in Conference League second qualifying.
The 2025/26 campaign was the breakthrough. Ħamrun beat Žalgiris on penalties in Champions League first qualifying, lost 0-6 on aggregate to Dynamo Kyiv in the second round, then lost to Maccabi Tel Aviv in Europa League third qualifying and beat RFS of Latvia 3-2 on aggregate in the Conference League play-off round to reach the league phase. In that league phase they beat Lincoln Red Imps 3-1 but lost to Lausanne-Sport, Samsunspor, Jagiellonia Białystok, Shakhtar Donetsk and Shamrock Rovers, finishing 33rd of 36, four points off the knockout play-off places.
