Hibernian
The club
Hibernian were founded on 6 August 1875 by members of the Irish community in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh, and the name comes from Hibernia, the Latin for Ireland. They have played at Easter Road since February 1893; the capacity is 20,421 since the ground was converted to all-seater in the mid-1990s. The colours are green and white. The club are the Hibees, or Hibs, and their supporters the Hibbies; an older nickname, the Cabbage, comes from rhyming slang on Cabbage and Ribs. The women's team was fully integrated into the club in 2022.
Recent seasons
Hibs have been an inconsistent top-half side rather than a settled one. They were seventh in the Premiership in 2019/20 with 37 points from a curtailed season, then third in 2020/21 with 63 points, reaching the Scottish Cup final and a League Cup semi-final. That was followed by eighth in 2021/22 with 45 points, though they reached the League Cup final and a Scottish Cup semi-final and played in Europa Conference League qualifying. They were fifth in 2022/23 with 52 points and eighth again in 2023/24 with 46, going out of the Conference League in the play-off round.
David Gray was made permanent head coach in June 2024. After a poor start in 2024/25 the side went on a 17-game unbeaten run and finished third with 58 points, 15 wins, 13 draws and 10 defeats. In 2025/26 they were fifth with 57 points from 38 games, 15 wins, 12 draws and 11 defeats, 58 goals scored and 44 conceded. They went out of the Scottish Cup in the fourth round and reached the League Cup quarter-finals, and in Europe went out of Europa League qualifying at the second qualifying round before dropping into the Conference League and losing in the play-off round.
Honours and landmarks
Hibernian have won the Scottish league championship four times, in 1902/03, 1947/48, 1950/51 and 1951/52. They have won the Scottish Cup three times, in 1887, 1902 and 2016, and the League Cup three times, in 1972, 1991 and 2007. Lower-division titles are Division Two in 1893/94 and 1894/95, the old First Division in 1980/81 and 1998/99, and the Championship in 2016/17. They have been league runners-up in 1896/97, 1946/47, 1949/50, 1952/53, 1973/74 and 1974/75.
The club's defining landmark is European: Hibs were the first British club to enter European competition and reached the semi-final of the inaugural 1955/56 European Cup, losing to Stade de Reims. The other defining fact is the 114-year gap between Scottish Cups, from 1902 to 2016, long enough that "Hibsed it" entered the Scottish football vocabulary as a term for losing from a winning position. The 2016 final was won 3-2 against Rangers. Record attendance is 65,860 against Heart of Midlothian in Division One on 2 January 1950, which remains the record for a football match in Edinburgh. Joe Baker scored 42 goals in 1959/60. Lawrie Reilly scored 233 between 1945 and 1958. Arthur Duncan made 446 appearances. Record fee received is £4.4m for Scott Brown to Celtic in 2007; record fee paid is £700,000 to LDU Quito for Ulises de la Cruz in 2001.
Notable scorelines
Record win: 15-1 against Peebles Rovers in the Scottish Cup second round on 11 February 1961. Record defeat: 0-10 against Rangers in Division One on 24 December 1898. The famous derby result is the 7-0 win at Tynecastle on 1 January 1973, the heaviest Edinburgh derby defeat either club has suffered.

The derby is the only fixture for which an all-time record is published. Up to 26 April 2026 Hearts and Hibernian had met 345 times competitively, Hearts winning 152, Hibernian 90, with 103 draws. Broken down: 300 league meetings (Hearts 129, Hibs 77, 94 draws), 39 Scottish Cup ties (Hearts 18, Hibs 12, 9 draws) and six League Cup ties (Hearts 5, Hibs 1, no draws). Hibs won one of the four derbies in 2025/26, 3-2 at Easter Road on 27 December 2025; Hearts won 1-0 at Tynecastle on 4 October, 1-0 at Tynecastle on 10 February 2026 and 2-1 at Easter Road on 26 April. No published all-time head-to-head record was found for the other 2026/27 Premiership clubs: Aberdeen, Celtic, Dundee, Dundee United, Falkirk, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Rangers, St Johnstone and St Mirren.

David Gray remains head coach, in post since 6 June 2024. The summer business was modest and mostly free. Defender Jason Kerr joined from Wigan Athletic and midfielder Callum Wright from Plymouth Argyle, both on frees; Azeem Abdulai arrived from Leyton Orient and Adam Mayor from Millwall, both for undisclosed fees. Forward Nathan Lowe came in on loan from Stoke City. Out went winger Elie Youan to Wisla Krakow on a free and Chris Cadden to Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee. Zach Bruce and Lewis Gillie went on loan to Stranraer and Murray Johnson to Shelbourne.
Pre-season took in a 5-1 win over Cliftonville, a 2-1 win over Brondby, a 1-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers and a 1-1 draw with Porto. Fifth place carried a European place, and in the Conference League second qualifying round Hibs lost 2-0 to KF Malisheva at the Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina on 23 July 2026 before winning 4-1 at Easter Road on 30 July to go through 4-3 on aggregate. The third qualifying round is against KF Shkendija, at home on 6 August and away in Skopje on 13 August. Because they finished in the European places, Hibs skip the League Cup group stage and enter at the second round, at home to Partick Thistle in August 2026. The Premiership campaign begins at home to Motherwell on Sunday 2 August 2026, followed by Rangers away on 9 August and Kilmarnock at home on 22 August.
