The club
Inter Miami CF, in full Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami, is a Major League Soccer franchise based in the Miami metropolitan area of Florida. MLS approved the club as its 25th franchise on January 29, 2018, and it began play in the 2020 season. The nickname is the Herons; the crest shows two white herons with interlocking legs forming the letter M, set inside an eclipse marked with seven rays, a reference to the shirt number David Beckham wore as a player. The club colours are pink, white, black and blue, and the club shield carries three points representing Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.
The ownership group is led by David Beckham as president, with Jorge Mas and Jose Mas as majority stakeholders; Ares Management also holds a stake. The original 2018 ownership group also included Simon Fuller, Marcelo Claure and Masayoshi Son, the SoftBank founder; Beckham and the Mas brothers bought out Claure's and Son's stakes in 2021. Beckham's route to ownership began with a clause in his 2007 MLS playing contract, negotiated by Fuller, that gave him the option of a discounted MLS expansion franchise.
The club's first home was Inter Miami CF Stadium, built on the former Lockhart Stadium site in Fort Lauderdale and opened on July 18, 2020, as an interim venue while a permanent Miami stadium was developed. It was renamed DRV PNK Stadium in 2021 under a sponsorship deal with AutoNation, then Chase Stadium from February 20, 2024 under a naming rights agreement with JPMorgan Chase. Capacity there grew from an original 18,000 to 21,550 through expansions in July 2023, using bleacher seating sourced from the Miami International Autodrome after Lionel Messi's signing was announced, and again in January 2024.
The club's permanent home is Miami Freedom Park, built on the site of the former Melreese Country Club near Miami International Airport. Construction began with a groundbreaking on August 28, 2023, and the stadium, with a capacity of 26,700, opened on April 4, 2026 with a match against Austin FC; Messi scored Inter Miami's first goal at the new ground. On March 3, 2026 the club announced a naming rights deal with the Brazilian financial technology company Nubank, and the stadium is known as Nu Stadium. A section of the east stand was designated the Leo Messi Stand on March 27, 2026. Inter Miami now play their home matches at Nu Stadium, having moved on from Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
Guillermo Hoyos has been head coach since April 14, 2026. He succeeded Javier Mascherano, who was appointed in November 2024 after Gerardo Martino left the post; Martino had been in charge from June 2023, having succeeded Phil Neville, who coached the club from January 2021 to June 2023 following Diego Alonso, the club's first head coach from 2019 to 2021.
Recent seasons
Inter Miami's early MLS seasons were poor: the club missed the playoffs in each of its first three years. In 2023 the team finished 14th in the Eastern Conference in MLS regular season play, with 9 wins, 7 draws and 18 losses from 34 matches and just 34 points, again missing the playoffs, even as the club's season was transformed off the back of the Leagues Cup run described below. In 2024 Inter Miami won the Supporters' Shield with a regular season record of 22 wins, 8 draws and 4 losses from 34 matches, 79 goals for and 49 against, and 74 points, the most in a single MLS regular season in the league's history; Messi shared the league's top scorer award with 20 goals and won the league's MVP award. That dominance did not carry into the playoffs, where ninth-seeded Atlanta United eliminated Inter Miami in the first round. In 2025 Inter Miami reached and won the MLS Cup, beating Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 in the final on December 6, 2025 at Chase Stadium, the club's first MLS Cup title. The club were runners-up in the U.S. Open Cup in 2023, losing 2-1 at home to Houston Dynamo in the final, the first time Inter Miami had reached that final. Notable scorelines
Inter Miami beat New England Revolution 6-2 to close out the 2024 regular season. In 2026 they beat Orlando City 4-2 on March 1 and thrashed Philadelphia Union 6-4 on May 24, but were beaten 4-1 by Nashville on August 15. The 2023 Leagues Cup final against Nashville SC finished level and was won by Inter Miami 10-9 on penalties. Inter Miami's established MLS rivalry is the Florida Derby, against Orlando City. There is also a local rivalry known as the Miami Clasico, against Miami FC of the USL Championship, a club outside MLS.
Inter Miami CF should not be confused with other clubs that share the "Inter" shorthand: Internazionale Milano, known as Inter Milan and the Italian club that plays in Serie A, and Sport Club Internacional of Porto Alegre, Brazil, commonly called Internacional or Inter, are both separate clubs with no ownership or organisational connection to the Florida franchise.
