LA Galaxy
The club
LA Galaxy is an American professional football club based in Carson, California, one of the ten founding franchises of Major League Soccer. The club was established on 15 June 1994 and began play in the league's inaugural 1996 season. It has been owned throughout by the Anschutz Entertainment Group. LA Galaxy is a separate club from Los Angeles Football Club, known as LAFC, which shares the city and did not begin play until 2018; the two are not the same organisation, and both appear in this corpus.
The club played its early seasons at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, from 1996 to 2002. In 2003 it moved to a new soccer-specific stadium in Carson, opened as the Home Depot Center, the second purpose-built soccer stadium in MLS history. The venue was renamed StubHub Center in 2013 and Dignity Health Sports Park in 2019, and remains the club's home, with a capacity of 27,000. The head coach as of 2026 is the American Greg Vanney, in his sixth season in charge.
Recent seasons
LA Galaxy won a record sixth MLS Cup on 7 December 2024, beating New York Red Bulls 2-1, a campaign in which the club set a playoff record of 18 goals scored across the postseason. Riqui Puig tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the Western Conference final but still had a hand in the winning goal of the final. In 2025 the club finished 14th of 15 teams in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs. Puig, expected back for 2026, suffered a setback in his recovery that required further surgery and has missed the season. Full details of the 2025 campaign beyond the final standing were not established from the sources read here.
Honours and landmarks
LA Galaxy have won a record six MLS Cups, in 2002, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2024, from ten final appearances, more than any other club in the league. They have also won the Supporters' Shield, awarded to the best regular-season record, four times, including in 2010 and 2011, and the U.S. Open Cup twice, in 2001 and 2005. In continental competition the club won the CONCACAF Champions' Cup in both 1999 and 2000, the second of those coming in the same year the club also reached the MLS Cup final, and LA Galaxy remain one of only three American clubs to have won that tournament.
Cobi Jones, part of the group of American internationals who returned from Europe to help launch MLS in 1996, played for the club from 1996 to 2007 and made 306 league appearances, a club record, scoring 70 goals; in 2005 he became the last player in the league still with his original 1996 club. Landon Donovan is the club's all-time leading goalscorer, with 253 appearances across two spells (2005-2014 and a brief return in 2016) and 113 goals, and became MLS's all-time leading goalscorer overall in May 2014. He won four MLS Cups with the Galaxy, was MLS Cup MVP in 2003 and 2011, and was later named to the league's All-Time Best XI.
Notable scorelines
The record signing of David Beckham from Real Madrid was announced on 11 January 2007, with his Galaxy contract beginning that July; the deal, together with the Designated Player rule created to accommodate it and later nicknamed after him, is credited with transforming the league's global profile. Beckham made his competitive debut as a substitute against D.C. United on 9 August 2007 and went on to make 98 league appearances and score 18 goals for the club through 2012, including two loan spells at AC Milan in 2009 and 2010, winning the MLS Cup in 2011 and 2012 as captain.
Robbie Keane, the Republic of Ireland's all-time leading goalscorer and most-capped player, joined in 2011 and made 125 appearances and scored 83 goals through 2016, winning three MLS Cups; he scored the 111th-minute winner in the 2014 final against New England Revolution to earn MLS Cup MVP, and a last-minute penalty in the 2012 final win over Houston Dynamo. He was made captain at the start of the 2013 season and kept the armband even after Steven Gerrard's arrival in 2015.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic signed in March 2018 after recovering from a serious knee injury sustained at Manchester United, and made his club debut as a substitute in the first ever El Trafico derby against LAFC on 31 March 2018, scoring twice, including from the halfway line, as the Galaxy came back from 3-0 down after 60 minutes to win 4-3. He made 56 appearances for the club and scored 52 goals before leaving for AC Milan in January 2020, with his 2019 tally ranking among the highest single-season totals in league history. The heaviest defeat in the El Trafico rivalry belongs to LAFC, a 6-2 win in the MLS is Back Tournament on 18 July 2020 in which Diego Rossi scored four goals. The club's all-time record win and record defeat in league and international competition beyond these were not established from the sources read here.
Head-to-head notes
The El Trafico rivalry with Los Angeles FC began when LAFC joined MLS in 2018; the name is a media and fan-coined pun on El Clasico, referencing the city's traffic. As of July 2026 the all-competition record stood at ten wins each from 27 meetings, with seven draws, an almost perfectly even series across both regular-season and playoff fixtures. A meeting at the Rose Bowl on 4 July 2023 set an MLS attendance record of 82,110. LA Galaxy also carry a long-standing rivalry with San Jose Earthquakes, dating to the league's founding season and known as the California Clasico, and carried one with the former Chivas USA, who shared Dignity Health Sports Park as tenants from 2005 to 2014 before folding; further detail on those rivalries was not established from the sources read here.
Right now (2026/27)
Greg Vanney remains head coach for a sixth season. As of 23 August 2026 LA Galaxy had played 22 matches in the MLS regular season, with six wins, eight draws and seven defeats for 26 points, sitting 12th in the Western Conference and 20th overall in the league, well off the playoff positions the club occupied when it won the title in 2024. Recent results include a 3-0 win over Charlotte FC and a 2-1 win over Atlanta United, against a 4-1 defeat to Colorado Rapids and further losses to Minnesota United and Sporting Kansas City, plus 1-1 draws with New York City FC and Portland Timbers. Riqui Puig, expected to return from his 2024 ACL injury for this season, instead required further surgery after a setback and has not featured. Further squad and transfer detail for 2026 was not established from the sources read here.
