Liverpool
The club
Liverpool were founded on 3 June 1892 and have played at Anfield throughout, the ground having been inherited from Everton after the split that created the club. Capacity is 61,276. They play in all red, adopted in full in 1964, and are known as the Reds.
Recent seasons
Liverpool finished third in 2020/21 with 99 points, sixth in 2021/22 with 75, fifth in 2022/23 with 82 and third in 2023/24 with 82. They won the Premier League in 2024/25, Arne Slot's first season in charge, the club's 20th league title and their second of the Premier League era.
The defence of it went badly. In 2025/26 Liverpool finished fifth with 60 points from 38 games, 17 wins, nine draws and 12 defeats, 63 goals scored and 53 conceded, 25 points behind champions Arsenal. They took a Champions League place through the European performance spot rather than by finishing in the top four. Hugo Ekitike was top scorer with 11 league goals and 17 in all competitions. They reached the Champions League quarter-finals, the FA Cup quarter-finals, where they lost 4-0 at Manchester City, and went out of the EFL Cup in the fourth round. They drew the Community Shield 2-2 and lost it. The season ended without a trophy, and on 30 May 2026 the club announced that Slot had left with immediate effect.
Honours and landmarks
Twenty league titles, a joint record. Eight FA Cups. Ten League Cups, a record. Six European Cups, more than any other English club. Three UEFA Cups. Four UEFA Super Cups. Sixteen Community Shields. One FIFA Club World Cup.
Ian Callaghan holds the appearance record with 857 competitive matches between 1960 and 1978. Ian Rush is the leading scorer with 346 goals in all competitions; Mohamed Salah stands third on the all-time list and first in the Premier League era. Liverpool went 44 league matches unbeaten between January 2019 and February 2020. Record attendance at Anfield is 61,905 against Wolverhampton Wanderers in an FA Cup tie in 1952.
The record fee paid is £125m to Newcastle United for Alexander Isak in September 2025, which is worth remembering because Liverpool open this season at St James' Park. The record fee received is £145m from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho in January 2018.
Notable scorelines

Record league win: 10-1 against Rotherham Town in the Second Division on 18 February 1896, with 9-0 wins over Crystal Palace in 1989 and Bournemouth in 2022 the biggest of the modern era. Record defeat, in the league and in all competitions: 1-9 against Birmingham City in the Second Division on 11 December 1954.
From last season, the biggest win was 6-0 at home to Qarabag in the Champions League on 28 January 2026. The heaviest defeat was the 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final loss at Manchester City.
Head-to-head notes
Liverpool do not publish all-time head-to-head records on their own website, and no published all-time record could be established for any of their 2026/27 Premier League opponents. Recent results are firmer ground.
Against Leeds United in 2025/26 Liverpool drew both meetings, 3-3 at Elland Road and 0-0 at Anfield, taking two points from six against a side that finished 14th. Against Manchester City they lost 4-0 in the FA Cup quarter-final. The Merseyside derby is now played at two new-ish venues, Everton having moved to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Three clubs come up: Coventry City after 25 years away, Ipswich Town after one, and Hull City after nine. West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers went down. Liverpool have no 2026/27 fixture against a club they have never met, but no all-time record for any of them could be verified from a published source.
Right now (2026/27)
Andoni Iraola was appointed head coach on 4 June 2026 on a two-year contract, five days after Arne Slot left. The club's own listing gives the appointment date as 5 June; the season page gives 4 June with the contract detail.
The summer has been the most disruptive in years, and almost all of it has been outgoing. Mohamed Salah left as a free agent on 30 June 2026, the end of the most productive scoring career in the club's Premier League history. Ibrahima Konate joined Real Madrid on a free the same day, and Andy Robertson joined Tottenham Hotspur, also on a free. Luca Stephenson went to Bolton Wanderers for £700,000 on 2 July and Tommy Pilling to MFK Zemplin Michalovce for an undisclosed fee on 29 July.
The replacements arrived in a single burst on 1 July: defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for £55m, forward Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5m, and defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe from Austria Wien for £2.6m. Liverpool have therefore lost three senior internationals for nothing and spent roughly £92m on three players, two of whom are defenders.
Pre-season was played in the United States: 4-2 against Sunderland in Nashville on 25 July and 1-0 against Wrexham in New York on 29 July.
The Premier League season starts on 21 August 2026. Liverpool's opening fixture is away to Newcastle United at St James' Park on Sunday 23 August 2026 at 4.30pm.
