The club
Midtjylland were founded on 2 February 1999 out of a merger between Ikast FS, founded 1935, and Herning Fremad, founded 1918. They are therefore one of the youngest clubs in Denmark and one of the most successful of the past decade. Home is the MCH Arena in Herning, capacity 12,055 after an expansion completed in March 2024 took it up from 11,432. The nicknames are Ulvene, the Wolves, and Hedens Drenge, the Boys of the Moor, a reference to the heathland of central Jutland. The first-choice kit is black.
Recent seasons
Midtjylland were second in the Danish Superliga in 2021/22 with 65 points from 20 wins, 5 draws and 7 defeats. They fell away to seventh in 2022/23 with 51. They won the title in 2023/24 with 63 points from 19 wins, 6 draws and 7 defeats, and were second in 2024/25 with 62 from 19 wins, 5 draws and 8 defeats.
In 2025/26 they were second again, on 60 points after the championship round, seven behind AGF on 67, who took their first Danish title in forty years, having last won the division in 1986. AGF clinched it on the penultimate matchday, 10 May 2026, beating Brondby 2-0 while Midtjylland drew 0-0 away at Nordsjaelland. Midtjylland's compensation was the Danish Cup, which they won that season.
Honours and landmarks
Four Danish Superliga titles, in 2014/15, 2017/18, 2019/20 and 2023/24. Three Danish Cups, in 2018/19, 2021/22 and 2025/26. One Danish 1st Division title, in 1999/2000, won in the club's second season of existence. They have been Superliga runners-up seven times, in 2006/07, 2007/08, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22, 2024/25 and 2025/26, which is a lot of second places for a club with four titles.
Notable scorelines
A record win and record defeat were not confirmed from the sources read here. The scoreline the club is best known for outside Denmark is the 2-1 win over Manchester United at the MCH Arena in the round of 32 of the 2015/16 Europa League. United won the return heavily and took the tie 6-3 on aggregate.
European record
Midtjylland's first European match was on 9 August 2001, a 1-1 draw with Glentoran in the UEFA Cup. Further UEFA Cup campaigns followed in 2002/03 and 2005/06, and a long run of Europa League appearances after that, most of them ending in the qualifying rounds.
The two landmarks are the 2015/16 Europa League round of 32 against Manchester United, won 2-1 in Herning and lost 6-3 on aggregate, and the club's first Champions League group stage in 2020/21, on the way to which they beat Slavia Prague 4-1 on 30 September 2020.
In 2026/27 they entered the Europa League second qualifying round and lost it. Besiktas beat them 1-0 at the Besiktas Stadium on 23 July 2026, Orkun Kokcu scoring on 26 minutes, and won 2-0 at the MCH Arena on 30 July through Rashica on 70 and Kokcu from the penalty spot on 76. Besiktas took the tie 3-0. Kokcu had joined Besiktas from Benfica for 25m euros earlier that summer and scored in both legs against Midtjylland. Losing the tie dropped Midtjylland into the Conference League third qualifying round.
