The club
Millwall were founded in 1885 as Millwall Rovers and play at The Den in Bermondsey, south-east London. The current Den opened on 4 August 1993 and has an all-seated capacity of 20,146, though it is normally operated at around 18,100. The club are the Lions and play in dark blue shirts, white shorts and blue socks, with a rampant lion crest in its present form since 2007.
The stadium question has been settled in the club's favour. Millwall announced a phased expansion plan in February 2020, adding upper tiers behind the existing seating to take The Den towards 34,000. Separately, the developer Renewal submitted plans in June 2021 for 3,500 homes in towers of up to 44 storeys around the ground over a fifteen-year period, including a new railway station. Millwall secured a 999-year lease on The Den from the council in May 2024, which removed the threat the redevelopment had posed to the club's tenure and gave them development rights of their own over housing, leisure and community space in the surrounding area.
Recent seasons
Millwall have been a Championship club throughout the recent period and have been steadily creeping up it. They finished eleventh in 2020/21 with 62 points, in a season played almost entirely behind closed doors or in front of 2,000. Ninth followed in 2021/22 with 69 points, eighth in 2022/23 with 68, then a dip to thirteenth in 2023/24 with 59. In 2024/25 they were eighth again with 66 points and reached the FA Cup fifth round.
The 2025/26 season was the best in the club's modern history and still ended in disappointment. Millwall finished third with 83 points, a club record that beat the 82 set in 1987/88. They kept 18 clean sheets, the best defensive record in the division, and took 41 points on the road, the best away record in the Championship. Alex Neil was manager throughout and Femi Azeez was top league scorer with eleven. They were beaten 2-0 by Hull City in the play-off semi-final and stayed down; Hull went on to reach the Premier League. In the cups they went out of the FA Cup in the third round and the EFL Cup in the third.
Honours and landmarks
Millwall have never won a top-flight title and have spent only two seasons in the first division, in 1988/89 and 1989/90. Their league championships are the Southern League in 1895 and 1896, the Third Division South in 1928 and 1938, the Fourth Division in 1962, and the Second Division in 1988 and 2001. They won the Football League Group Cup in 1983 and were Football League Trophy finalists in 1999.
The club's landmark achievement is the FA Cup final of 2004, lost 3-0 to Manchester United, reached from the second tier and worth a UEFA Cup place. They had previously been FA Cup semi-finalists in 1900, 1903 and 1937, the 1937 run made as a Third Division South side.
Record attendance at the old Den is 48,762 against Derby County in an FA Cup tie in 1937. At the current Den the highest Football League crowd is 19,004, set in January 2026 for a 4-0 win over Charlton Athletic. Barry Kitchener holds the appearance record with 596 games between 1966 and 1982, and Neil Harris is the leading scorer with 138 across two spells, 1998 to 2004 and 2007 to 2011. Record fee paid is £5m for Josh Coburn from Middlesbrough; record fee received is £14.5m for Romain Esse to Crystal Palace.

Striker Tairyk Arconte arrived from Rodez for £2.6m on 23 June. Attacking midfielder Mathis Servais came from Mechelen for £5.1m on 6 July, a fee that on the published figures exceeds the previously recorded club record. Mark Sykes joined on a free from Bristol City on 9 July, centre-back Elkan Baggott from Ipswich Town for an undisclosed fee on 15 July, and winger Kyrell Lisbie from Peterborough United on 26 July for £3m plus up to £3m in add-ons. Out went striker Macaulay Langstaff to Salford City on 3 July for an undisclosed fee, midfielder Barry Bannan to Sheffield Wednesday on a free on 9 July, and left-back Adam Mayor to Hibernian on 14 July for an undisclosed fee.
