Montrose
The club
Montrose were founded on 13 October 1879 and play at Links Park in Montrose, on the Angus coast between Dundee and Aberdeen. The ground holds 4,936. The club are known as the Gable Endies, after the gable-ended houses of the town, and also as the Mo. They play in red and white striped shirts at home and white away.
Recent seasons
Montrose have been a League One club throughout the period, having won League Two in 2017/18. They finished fourth in 2019/20 and fourth again in 2020/21, then produced their best modern campaign in 2021/22, finishing third. Seventh followed in 2022/23, fourth in 2023/24 and eighth in 2024/25. In 2025/26 they were sixth of ten with 42 points from 36 games, 11 wins, 9 draws and 16 defeats, scoring 48 and conceding 67. That goals-against column was the second worst in the division and is the clearest thing separating them from the play-off places: the sides above them all conceded fewer. Inverness Caledonian Thistle won the league on 69 points and Stenhousemuir went up through the play-offs; Kelty Hearts were relegated.
Honours and landmarks
Montrose have never won a major national trophy. Their league championships are the Second Division of 1984/85 and League Two of 2017/18. They won the Scottish Qualifying Cup in 1921 and the Forfarshire Cup ten times, most recently in 2001/02. Record attendance is 8,983 against Dundee in a Scottish Cup quarter-final on 17 March 1973, still the furthest the club have gone in that competition. Terry Masson holds the appearance record with 503 between 2010 and 2026, a figure that dwarfs anything else in the modern club's records. Bobby Livingstone is the record scorer with 165. The record fee received is £50,000 from Hibernian for Gary Murray in December 1980; the record fee paid is £25,000 to Elgin City for Kane Hester in May 2023. Stewart Petrie has managed the club since December 2016, which makes him one of the longest-serving managers in Scottish senior football.
Notable scorelines
Record victory: 18-2 against Dundee Hibernian in the Forfar County League on 11 May 1895. Record defeat: 0-13 against Aberdeen 'A' in Scottish Division C on 17 March 1951. The most useful recent result is the Premier Sports Cup group win over Dundee United at Links Park in July 2026, a 1-0 against a Premiership side that still finished top of the group.
Head-to-head notes
Montrose do not publish all-time head-to-head records on their own site, and no published all-time record was found for any of their 2026/27 League One opponents: Airdrieonians, Alloa Athletic, Cove Rangers, East Fife, East Kilbride, Hamilton Academical, Peterhead, Queen of the South or Ross County. Three of those are new to the division this season, Airdrieonians and Ross County coming down from the Championship and East Kilbride up from League Two, so recent league form against them is thin. What is established is the July 2026 cup record: Montrose beat Dundee United 1-0 at home, lost 2-0 at home to The Spartans, won 2-0 at Arbroath and won 2-0 at Stirling Albion. They finished second in Group B on nine points, level with Dundee United but behind on goal difference, and went out. The Spartans defeat is the anomaly in an otherwise clean set of results and was the game that cost them qualification.
Right now (2026/27)
Stewart Petrie remains manager, in his tenth full season. Three senior signings arrived in the summer. Midfielder Jamie Barjonas signed a two-year contract from Hamilton Academical on 24 June 2026. Defender Flynn Duffy signed on 29 June on a one-year deal with an option for a further year. Defender Sean McGinty also agreed a two-year deal; the announcement date was not established. Striker Gary Oliver joined on a two-year deal on 16 July, and on 28 July the club took striker Jake Sutherland on a season-long loan from Dunfermline Athletic. Sean Dillon signed a one-year extension on 6 July at the age of 42. Academy graduates Kyle McClements and Fraser Donaldson were given first professional contracts on 15 July; Donaldson made three appearances last season and McClements scored three times in 13. Aidan Quinn was appointed club captain on 13 July with Graham Webster as vice-captain.
Going the other way, Andrew Steeves retired on 8 July after eleven years at the club, and Connor Woodcock departed on 30 June.
The League One campaign opens at home to Hamilton Academical on Saturday 1 August 2026. Hamilton are the awkward opponent to open against: they finished ninth last season on 34 points, below Montrose, but won the play-offs to stay up, and they scored 54 goals doing it.
