The club
Newcastle United were formed in 1892 by the merger of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End, with roots traced to Stanley FC in 1881. They play at St James' Park in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, capacity 52,264. They are the Magpies, and play in black and white striped shirts with black shorts.
Recent seasons
Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League in 2020/21 with 45 points and 11th in 2021/22 with 49, Eddie Howe having taken over on 8 November 2021 with the club in the relegation places. The three seasons that followed were the best modern run in the club's history: fourth in 2022/23 with 71 points and Champions League qualification, seventh in 2023/24 with 60, and fifth in 2024/25 with 66. The 2024/25 season also brought the League Cup, won 2-1 against Liverpool at Wembley on 16 March 2025, ending a 56-year wait for a major trophy. Then 2025/26 went badly wrong. Newcastle finished 12th with 49 points, out of Europe altogether, reaching the fifth round of the FA Cup and the League Cup semi-final. Arsenal won the title on 85 points; Sunderland, newly promoted, finished 7th and qualified for the Europa League.

Four league championships, all before the Second World War: 1904/05, 1906/07, 1908/09 and 1926/27. Six FA Cups: 1910, 1924, 1932, 1951, 1952 and 1955. One League Cup, 2024/25. The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup of 1969 and the Intertoto Cup of 2006. Record attendance is 68,386 against Chelsea in the First Division on 3 September 1930, from an era when St James' Park held far more than it does now. Jimmy Lawrence holds the appearance record with 496 competitive games between 1904 and 1922. Alan Shearer is the record scorer with 206 goals in 405 appearances between 1996 and 2006. The record fee paid is £69.3m to VfB Stuttgart for Nick Woltemade in August 2025. The record fee received is £125m from Liverpool for Alexander Isak in September 2025, comfortably the largest transfer in the club's history.
Notable scorelines
Record league victory: 13-0 against Newport County in the Second Division on 5 October 1946, which remains one of the largest wins in English league history. Record win in all competitions away from home: 9-0 at Southport in the FA Cup on 1 February 1932. Record league defeat: 0-9 against Burton Wanderers in the Second Division on 15 April 1895.

Newcastle do not publish all-time head-to-head records in a form that could be retrieved, and no published all-time record was established for any 2026/27 Premier League opponent. What is on record is the 13-0 against Newport County in 1946, and the League Cup final win over Liverpool on 16 March 2025. Liverpool are the opening-day opponents this season and finished fifth in 2025/26 on 60 points, eleven above Newcastle. The Tyne-Wear derby is in the fixture list again after Sunderland's promotion, and Sunderland finished five places and five points above Newcastle last season. West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers were relegated and are not in the division.

The head coach position is vacant. Eddie Howe stepped down on 31 July 2026, after four and a half years and 12th place in his final season. This is the single most important thing about Newcastle's position right now and any article should treat the coaching situation as unresolved rather than assume a name.
Transfer business over the summer was heavy and net-positive in cash terms. Out: Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3m on 1 July 2026; Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for £92.5m plus £7.5m in add-ons on 6 July; Joe White to Crewe Alexandra for an undisclosed fee on 16 July. In: goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims for £18.5m on 15 June; winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim for £42.8m on 5 July; midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax for £19.6m plus £3m in add-ons on 9 July; and defensive midfielder Aladji Bamba from Monaco for £30m plus £5.5m on 24 July. Two of the club's most established players have gone and the replacements are all under-25 arrivals from continental clubs.
Pre-season results were poor. Newcastle beat Darlington 3-0 on 18 July 2026, drew 1-1 at Gateshead on 25 July and lost 4-1 at Bristol City on 29 July. Further friendlies are scheduled against Valencia on 8 August, Everton on 12 August, Bayer Leverkusen on 15 August and Strasbourg on 16 August.
Newcastle play no European football this season. The Premier League campaign opens at home to Liverpool on 23 August 2026, followed by Tottenham Hotspur away on 29 August and Bournemouth at home on 5 September. Off the field, home shirts carry KNOX branding from the end of July 2026, and Shola Ameobi was appointed head of corporate affairs in late July.
