The club

Norwich City were founded on 17 June 1902 and play at Carrow Road in Norwich, capacity 27,359. They are the Canaries and play in yellow shirts with green trim.

Recent seasons

Norwich have spent the period bouncing between the divisions and then settling. They were relegated from the Premier League in 2019/20 with 21 points, won the Championship at the first attempt in 2020/21 with 97, and were relegated again in 2021/22 with 22 points, bottom of the table both times. Since coming back down they have been a Championship club: 13th in 2022/23 with 62 points, sixth in 2023/24 with 73 and a play-off place, 13th again in 2024/25 with 57, and ninth in 2025/26 with 65 points from 46 games, 19 wins, 8 draws and 19 defeats, 63 goals scored and 56 conceded. Nineteen wins and nineteen defeats is an unusually volatile record for a mid-table side. Jovon Makama was top scorer with 10 league goals and 13 in all competitions. They reached the fifth round of the FA Cup and went out of the EFL Cup in the second round. Coventry City won the division on 95 points; Hull City came up through the play-offs after Southampton were disqualified from them for unauthorised filming of other clubs' training sessions.

Honours and landmarks

Norwich have won the League Cup twice, in 1962 and 1985, and those are their only major national trophies. Their divisional titles are the Norfolk and Suffolk League in 1904/05, the Third Division South in 1933/34, the Second Division in 1971/72 and 1985/86, the First Division in 2003/04, League One in 2009/10 and the Championship in 2018/19 and 2020/21. Their highest league finish is third in the Premiership in 1992/93, the inaugural Premier League season. They have reached the FA Cup semi-final three times, most recently in 1992. Record attendance is 43,984 for an FA Cup sixth round tie against Leicester City on 30 March 1963. Kevin Keelan holds the appearance record with 673 first-team matches between 1963 and 1980, a figure very few English clubs can match. Johnny Gavin is the record scorer with 122 goals between 1948 and 1955; Ralph Hunt scored 31 league goals in 1955/56, the club's single-season record. Record fee received is £33m from Aston Villa for Emiliano Buendia in 2021. Record fee paid is £9.1m, a figure reached three times, for Steven Naismith, Christos Tzolis and Milot Rashica.

Notable scorelines

Record victory: 10-2 against Coventry City in the Third Division South in 1930. Record defeat: 2-10 against Swindon Town in the Southern League in 1908. The two scorelines are the same, in opposite directions, twenty-two years apart.

Head-to-head notes

Norwich do not publish all-time head-to-head records and none were established for any 2026/27 Championship opponent. The division has changed substantially: West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers have come down from the Premier League, and Lincoln City, Cardiff City and Bolton Wanderers up from League One, while Leicester City, Oxford United and Sheffield Wednesday have gone down. Their opening opponents, West Bromwich Albion, finished 21st last season on 51 points, fourteen behind Norwich. The EFL Cup first round tie is at home to Milton Keynes Dons, who were promoted from League Two in second place on 86 points.

Philippe Clement is head coach, appointed on 18 November 2025 on a contract running to the end of 2028/29. He replaced Liam Manning, dismissed on 8 November 2025 after a 2-1 home defeat by Leicester City, having won fewer than one game in five across 17 matches. Manning's assistant Chris Hogg left at the same time and is now managing Northampton Town.

Summer business was modest. In: midfielder Sam Field from Queens Park Rangers on 19 June 2026 for an undisclosed fee; winger Andre Brooks from Sheffield United on 25 June, also undisclosed; centre-back Vinnie Leonard from Dundalk on 1 July for a reported 650,000 euros including add-ons; and centre-back Bruno Alves on loan from Cruzeiro on 18 June with an option to buy. Out: goalkeeper George Long to Southampton on a free on 15 June, and forward La'Sean Sealey to SW Bregenz on 22 July.

Pre-season was strong defensively. Norwich won 2-0 at King's Lynn Town on 4 July, drew 0-0 at Colchester United on 11 July, won 3-0 at St Gallen on 17 July, drew 0-0 at AFC Wimbledon on 22 July and won 2-0 at Fulham on 25 July. Five matches, no goals conceded, seven scored, including a win over a Premier League side.

The EFL Cup first round tie against Milton Keynes Dons is at Carrow Road on 8 August 2026. The Championship campaign opens at home to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday 15 August at 3pm, then Millwall away on 22 August at 12.30pm, Burnley at home on 29 August and Stoke City away on 1 September at 8pm.
