The club

Nottingham Forest were founded in 1865 and play at the City Ground, which sits on the Trent in West Bridgford rather than in Nottingham proper. Capacity is 30,445. The club are the Reds, the Tricky Trees and, less often now, the Garibaldis; the home shirt is "Garibaldi red", named after the Italian general whose redshirts the founders admired.

Recent seasons

Forest spent 2020/21 in the Championship and went up the following year, finishing fourth in 2021/22 with 80 points from 46 games and beating Huddersfield Town 1-0 in the play-off final at Wembley on 29 May 2022, the only goal an own goal on 43 minutes. Survival in the Premier League was tight in 2022/23, when 32 points was enough, and again in 2023/24. The 2024/25 season was the best of the modern era: seventh with 65 points, 19 wins, and Matz Sels sharing the Golden Glove with 13 clean sheets. That included a 7-0 home win over Brighton on 1 February 2025, the biggest home win in the division that season.

2025/26 was chaotic in the dugout and thin on the pitch. Nuno Espirito Santo departed on 8 September 2025. Ange Postecoglou took over on 9 September and was dismissed on 18 October after a 3-0 home defeat by Chelsea. Sean Dyche arrived on 21 October and was sacked on 12 February 2026. Vitor Pereira was appointed on 15 February on an 18-month contract. Forest finished 16th with 44 points, safe once Arsenal beat West Ham on 10 May. Both domestic cups ended in the third round. The compensation was Europe: a first continental campaign in 29 years took them to the Europa League semi-final, where Aston Villa beat them 4-0. Morgan Gibbs-White was top scorer with 15 league goals and 18 in all competitions.

Honours and landmarks

The First Division title of 1977/78 is the club's only league championship. The European Cup was won in 1978/79 and 1979/80, and the UEFA Super Cup in 1980. The FA Cup was won in 1898 and 1959. The League Cup has been won four times; the sources read confirm 1978, 1989 and 1990 among them. There is one FA Charity Shield. Bob McKinlay made 692 appearances between 1951 and 1970, and Grenville Morris scored 217 goals between 1898 and 1913, both club records. The 42-match unbeaten league run from 26 November 1977 to 25 November 1978 remains the club's longest. Record attendance is 49,946 against Manchester United in Division One on 28 October 1967; the lowest recorded crowd is 2,031 against Brentford in the Football League Trophy on 31 October 2006. The record fee received is the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson in July 2026, the largest sale in the club's history. The record fee paid is £37.5m to Ipswich Town for Omari Hutchinson.

Notable scorelines

Record victory: 14-0 away to Clapton in the FA Cup first round on 17 January 1891. Record defeat: 1-9 against Blackburn Rovers in Division Two on 10 April 1937. Of the modern results, the 7-0 defeat of Brighton on 1 February 2025 is the largest of the Premier League era, and the 4-0 Europa League semi-final loss to Aston Villa in 2026 ended the club's first European run since the 1990s.

Forest do not publish all-time head-to-head records on their own site in a form that the sources read reached, and no published all-time record against any 2026/27 Premier League opponent could be established. What is established is local rather than league: Forest beat Notts County 2-0 at Meadow Lane in pre-season on 18 July 2026. Leeds United are the opening-day visitors on 22 August; the last competitive meeting between the two was not established from the sources read. West Ham, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers were relegated at the end of 2025/26 and will not feature.

The window has been dominated by one transaction: Elliot Anderson to Manchester City for £116m on 2 July 2026. David Carmo went to Olympiacos for an undisclosed fee on 30 June, Jota Silva followed on loan to the same club on 9 July, and striker Joe Gardner joined Falkirk for an undisclosed fee on 28 July. The incomings have been cheap or free rather than reinvestment of the Anderson money so far: midfielder Grady McDonnell on a free from Club Brugge on 23 June, left-back Kasen Brown on a free from Manchester City on 3 July, midfielder Boyd Fraser from Heart of Midlothian for an undisclosed fee on 6 July, attacking midfielder Mason Ayre from Glentoran and midfielder Blaine McClure from Rangers, both undisclosed, on 7 July, and Austria international Xaver Schlager on a free from RB Leipzig on 23 July.

Pre-season went well. Forest won 2-0 at Notts County on 18 July and 3-0 at Blackburn Rovers on 22 July, drew 1-1 with Vitoria de Guimaraes in Portugal on 26 July, and were due to face Portimonense on 31 July. The Premier League campaign opens at home to Leeds United on Saturday 22 August 2026 at 3pm. As a Premier League club Forest do not enter the EFL Cup until the second or third round.
