OFI Crete
Also written as OFI.
The club
OFI were founded on 25 November 1925 in Heraklion, on Crete, as Omilos Filathlon Irakleiou, the Heraklion Sportsmen's Club, and the initials are what everyone still calls them. The nickname is "O Omilos", the Club. This is the Heraklion club named OFI and no other: it is not Ergotelis, the second Heraklion side and OFI's local rival, and it is not PAOK or any other mainland club, whatever the black-and-white shirts might suggest. OFI have worn black and white since foundation. The crest was redesigned in 2020 into a circular emblem built around the Greek letters.
The home ground was for decades the Theodoros Vardinogiannis Stadium, which opened in 1951 and holds 12,391. It can no longer be licensed for official matches on structural safety grounds, and from the 2025/26 season OFI have played at the Pankritio Stadium in the same city, capacity 26,240. The record attendance at the old ground was a full house of 12,391 against Olympiacos on 25 September 1988, a match OFI won 2-1.
The head coach is Christos Kontis, appointed on 27 October 2025. The captain is Thanasis Androutsos. The president is Michael Bousis, in post since October 2018. The club's longest-serving coach was the Dutchman Eugène Gerards, in charge across the period from 1985 to 2000, described as the longest tenure in the history of the Greek league.
OFI are the most successful Cretan club, with 48 seasons in the Greek top flight as of 2024. They first reached it in 1968, going up through a 3-0 play-off win in Chania on 26 June, and finished twelfth on their debut in 1968/69. The club has twice been broken and rebuilt: relegated from the Super League after finishing sixteenth in 2008/09, and then, on 21 March 2015, withdrawn from professional competition altogether during the 2014/15 season because the administration could not meet its obligations, with a reported debt of around twelve million euros. Fifteen remaining players took the field at the Vardinogiannis to say goodbye. The professional department was merged back into the parent sports club, and OFI climbed again, winning the third division in 2015/16 and the Football League in 2017/18 to return to the top flight. The number of consecutive professional seasons the 2015 withdrawal ended was reported inconsistently in the sources read here and is not stated.
Nikos Machlas is the club's best-known player. He made his debut in February 1991, scored 48 goals in 154 appearances before joining Vitesse in 1996, returned for a second spell from 2004 to 2006 with 21 goals in 52 matches, and came back again in 2009 as sporting director as the club set about getting out of the second division.
Recent seasons
OFI finished twelfth in 2020/21, eighth in 2021/22, seventh in 2022/23 after topping the play-out group, tenth in 2023/24 and eighth in 2024/25. In 2025/26 they were sixth in the regular season on 32 points from 26 matches, 10 wins, 2 draws and 14 defeats, 34 goals scored and 45 conceded, then went into the Europe play-offs and were placed seventh overall. It was a mid-table league season that mattered not at all, because they won the Greek Cup.

Notable scorelines
The biggest European win is 6-0 at home to Napredak in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup. The most celebrated domestic result is a 5-4 win away to Olympiacos at the Karaiskakis Stadium in 1990, recovered from four goals down. The heaviest European defeats are 4-0 away to Hajduk Split in 1986/87 and 4-1 at home to Boavista in 1993/94. OFI's all-time record domestic win and record defeat were not established from the sources read here.
European record
OFI first played in Europe in the 1986/87 UEFA Cup, beating Hajduk Split 1-0 at home and losing 4-0 in Split. In the 1987/88 Cup Winners' Cup they knocked out Vitosha Sofia, 3-1 at home and 1-0 down away, and then lost to Atalanta, 1-0 up at home and 2-0 down in Italy. It was that Atalanta tie, in October 1987, that began the long friendship between OFI's supporters and PAOK's, the PAOK fans having travelled to back them.
The 1993/94 UEFA Cup was the best of the early runs. OFI beat Slavia Prague 1-0 at home and drew 1-1 away, then beat Atlético Madrid 2-0 at home and lost only 1-0 in Madrid, before going out to Boavista, beaten 4-1 at home and 2-0 away. They played the 1995/96 Intertoto Cup, winning group matches including one over Nea Salamina and losing in the second round to Bursaspor.
In 1997/98 they beat KR Reykjavík 3-1 at home and drew 0-0 away, beat Ferencváros 3-0 at home and lost 2-1 away, and went out to Auxerre, winning 3-2 at home and losing 3-1 in France. In 2000/01 they beat Napredak 6-0 at home and drew 0-0 away, then lost to Slavia Prague, 2-2 at home and 4-1 away. That was the last European appearance for two decades apart from the 2007/08 Intertoto Cup, lost 1-0 in each leg to Tobol.
The return came in 2020/21, a single-leg Europa League tie lost 1-0 at home to Apollon Limassol.
