AC Omonia

The club
Omonia were founded in Nicosia on 4 June 1948 in a split from APOEL along political lines, and the two clubs have shared the GSP Stadium, capacity 22,859, ever since it opened. Omonia are known as I Vasilissa, the Queen, and To Trifylli, the Shamrock. They play in green and white, the green standing for hope and the white for happiness in the club's own account of the colours.
Recent seasons
Omonia won the Cypriot First Division in 2020/21, their 21st title, and won it again in 2025/26, their 22nd, under Henning Berg. The four seasons in between were difficult and are described in the sources read here only in general terms: a turbulent 2024/25 with Giannis Anastasiou as football adviser, Valdas Dambrauskas appointed head coach and then departing in November 2024, and Anastasiou taking interim charge to the end of the season. To 22 July 2026 Omonia had played 196 matches in European competition, winning 73, drawing 36 and losing 87, with 265 goals scored and 293 conceded. Their heaviest European defeats are old ones: 0-9 away to Bayern Munich in the 1972/73 European Cup and 0-8 away to 1860 Munich in 1966/67.
Their modern high point is the 2020/21 Europa League, which brought the club its first group stage in any European competition. They reached it by beating Red Star Belgrade on penalties in the play-off round, then finished fourth in Group E: 1-2 at home and 0-4 away against PSV Eindhoven, 2-1 at home and 1-1 away against PAOK, and 0-2 at home and 1-2 away against Granada. The 2-1 over PAOK is the only win of the six, and was the club's first ever at group-stage level.
In 2021/22 they were in Group H of the Conference League and finished third. In 2022/23 they were back in the Europa League group stage, again Group E, and again fourth: 2-3 at home and 0-1 away against Manchester United, 0-2 at home and 1-2 away against Real Sociedad, and 0-3 at home and 0-1 away against Sheriff Tiraspol, a campaign without a point. In 2023/24 they went out in the Conference League third qualifying round. In 2024/25 they finished 22nd in the Conference League league phase and lost the knockout play-off to Pafos 3-2 on aggregate. In 2025/26 they again reached the Conference League knockout play-off and lost it 4-1 on aggregate to Rijeka.
The pattern is consistent and worth stating plainly: Omonia reach group and league phases regularly and rarely win in them.

Henning Berg is the head coach. He first took the job in June 2019, was replaced, and returned ahead of the 2025/26 season, which he ended with the club's 22nd league title. No 2026/27 transfer business was established from the sources read here and none is claimed.
The Cypriot First Division does not begin until the weekend of 29 and 30 August 2026, so Omonia have played no domestic football this season. Everything so far has been European.
As Cypriot champions they entered the Champions League at the second qualifying round, Champions Path, against Kairat of Kazakhstan. They won the first leg 1-0 at the GSP on 22 July 2026 and lost the return 1-0 in Almaty on 29 July after extra time; 1-1 on aggregate, and Kairat won 6-5 on penalties. Omonia dropped into the Europa League third qualifying round.
The tie they are in right now is against Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar, and it is closer than it should be. The first leg at the Europa Point Stadium on 6 August 2026 finished 1-1. Christian Rutjens put Lincoln ahead on 71 minutes and Panagiotis Andreou equalised in the third minute of stoppage time, 90+3, which is the difference between a defeat to Gibraltar's champions and a level tie. The second leg is at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia on 13 August 2026. Omonia will start it having lost one penalty shootout already this summer and having conceded first to a side from the smallest association in the draw.
