Recent seasons
Six seasons that cover a promotion, a relegation and then a long flat spell in the third tier. Peterborough were League One runners-up in 2020/21 and went up, then came straight back down from the Championship in 2021/22. They reached the League One play-off semi-finals in 2022/23 and won the EFL Trophy in 2023/24. The club's Wikipedia article gives 18th of 24 in League One for 2024/25, the season they retained the EFL Trophy. 2025/26 was harder again: 18th with 53 points from 15 wins, eight draws and 23 defeats, 64 goals scored and 68 conceded. Darren Ferguson was dismissed on 25 October 2025 after a 2-1 home defeat by Blackpool and Luke Williams was appointed on 29 October on a three-year contract. Harry Leonard was top scorer with 16 league goals and 17 in all competitions. The cup runs were short: out of the EFL Cup in the first round, the FA Cup in the second and the EFL Trophy in the second. The biggest win was 6-1 over Wigan Athletic on 7 February 2026 and the heaviest defeat 5-2 at Lincoln City on 4 January. The highest home crowd was 10,827 against Luton Town on 9 August 2025, against a league average of 8,125. 2026/27 is a sixth consecutive season in League One.
Honours and landmarks
Peterborough were Fourth Division champions in 1960/61, their first season in the Football League, and again in 1973/74. Before that they won the Midland League six times, including five in a row between 1955 and 1960. They have won promotion through the play-offs three times, in 1992 and 2000 from the Third Division and in 2011 from League One. The club's real modern distinction is the EFL Trophy: won in 2013/14, then in 2023/24 and 2024/25, making Peterborough the first club to retain it. The highest league finish is 10th in the old First Division in 1992/93. Tommy Robson made 482 league appearances between 1968 and 1981 and Jim Hall scored 122 league goals between 1967 and 1975. The single-season record belongs to Terry Bly, whose 52 goals in 1960/61 remain an all-time Fourth Division record. Record attendance is 30,096 against Swansea Town in the FA Cup fifth round on 20 February 1965. The record fee received is roughly £7m rising to £10m from Brentford for Ivan Toney in August 2020; the record fee paid is a little over £1.25m to Bristol City for Mohamed Eisa in June 2019.
Notable scorelines
The club's all-time record win and record defeat were not established from the sources read. The largest results of the most recent season were a 6-1 win over Wigan Athletic on 7 February 2026 and a 5-2 defeat at Lincoln City on 4 January 2026. The EFL Trophy finals of 2024 and 2025 are the matches the club would point to.
Head-to-head notes
No published all-time head-to-head records against 2026/27 League One opponents were found. Bradford City, the opening-day hosts, came up from League Two before 2025/26 and no record between the clubs was established. Bristol Rovers, drawn away in the EFL Cup first round, were a League Two club in 2025/26 and no record was established. Wigan Athletic and Lincoln City provided the previous season's extreme results, noted above; Lincoln City won League One in 2025/26 with 103 points and are no longer in the division.
Right now (2026/27)
Luke Williams remains in charge, appointed on 29 October 2025 on a three-year deal, and this is his first full season.
Recruitment has focused on the spine and the flanks. Attacking midfielder Harrison Jones joined from Sunderland for an undisclosed fee on 18 June 2026, goalkeeper Collin Andeng-Ndi from Southend United on 25 June, centre-back Tom O'Connor on a free from Wrexham on 30 June, and on 1 July winger Owura Edwards from Colchester United and left-back Evan Weir from Walsall. Out went winger Cian Hayes to Rochdale for an undisclosed fee and winger Abraham Odoh to Salford City, both on 2 July, and Kyrell Lisbie to Millwall on 26 July.

The competitive season opens with an EFL Cup first-round tie away to Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium on 8 August 2026 at 3pm. The League One campaign begins away to Bradford City on Saturday 15 August 2026.
