The club

FC Polissya Zhytomyr trace their history to Avanhard Zhytomyr, founded in 1959 in the city of Zhytomyr in northern Ukraine. The club made its professional debut on 18 April 1959, a 1-0 win over Spartak Minsk. Through the Soviet era the club changed its name repeatedly: Polissya Zhytomyr from 1960 to 1966, Avtomobilist Zhytomyr from 1967 to 1976, Spartak Zhytomyr from 1977 to 1988, back to Polissya from 1988 to 1992, then Khimik Zhytomyr from 1992 to 1997, before reverting to FC Polissya Zhytomyr from 1997 to 2005. That original club became defunct after the 2004-05 season, and Zhytomyr was left without a senior professional club for over a decade. The present-day organisation was reestablished in 2016 as MFC Zhytomyr and renamed FC Polissya Zhytomyr in March 2017, presenting itself as a phoenix club continuing the identity and the 1959 founding date of the earlier team.

Polissya play at the Tsentralnyi Stadion (Central Stadium) in Zhytomyr, which holds 5,928.
