FC Pyunik

The club
FC Pyunik were established on 20 January 1992 as Homenetmen Yerevan, and took the name Pyunik, Armenian for "Phoenix", in 1995. The club is based in the Kentron district in the centre of Yerevan and plays its home matches at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium, capacity 14,403, the same national stadium used by Ararat Yerevan and, for European ties, by other Yerevan clubs whose own grounds fall short of UEFA's requirements. Pyunik have predominantly worn blue and white throughout their history, with a few exceptions, including their first-ever jerseys, which were orange.
Pyunik is not FC Alashkert and it is not FC Ararat-Armenia, the other two Armenian clubs covered elsewhere in this corpus, and the three have separate homes, separate histories and separate honours. Alashkert were founded in 1990 in Martuni, in Gegharkunik Province, folded in 2000, were revived in Yerevan in 2011 and play at the Alashkert Stadium, the former Nairi Stadium; their honours are four league titles and one Armenian Cup. Ararat-Armenia are a much younger club, founded in 2017 as FC Avan Academy, based at the Yerevan Football Academy Stadium in the Avan district of northern Yerevan, and owned by Samvel Karapetyan; their honours to date are three league titles, the most recent in 2025/26. The rivalry most closely associated with Pyunik is not with either of those clubs but with FC Urartu, based across the city in the Malatia-Sebastia district, a fixture sometimes described as a clash between Yerevan neighbourhoods, and with FC Ararat Yerevan, the Soviet-era club founded in 1935 whose place as Armenia's most famous side Pyunik's run of championships in the 2000s is credited with displacing.
The head coach is the Armenian Artak Oseyan, who took over on 12 August 2025 after Yegishe Melikyan departed on 6 August 2025. Honours and landmarks
Pyunik are the most successful club in Armenian football since independence. They have won the Armenian Premier League sixteen times, in 1992, 1995/96, 1996/97, and every season from 2001 to 2010, then again in 2014/15, 2021/22 and 2023/24; that is roughly half of every championship awarded since the league's founding in 1992, comfortably ahead of the next-best clubs, Shirak and Alashkert on four apiece. They have won the Armenian Cup eight times, in 1995/96, 2002, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15, and the Armenian Supercup ten times, in 1998, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2015 and 2022, for 34 major domestic titles in total. In 2022/23 Pyunik became the first Armenian club to reach the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, and later that season reached the group stage of the UEFA Europa Conference League, the club's first European group-stage appearance, where a win over Slovan Bratislava was reported as the first UEFA group-stage win by an Armenian team.

Pyunik's biggest recorded European win is 6-0 at home to Tampere United of Finland in Champions League qualifying in 2002. More recently they beat Narva Trans 5-0 in the 2023/24 Conference League and Tre Fiori 5-1 in the 2025/26 Conference League. On the other side of the ledger, Pyunik have taken some heavy European beatings: 0-9 away to Viktoria Plzen in 2011/12 Champions League qualifying, 0-8 at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 2019/20 Europa League, and 0-7 away to Red Star Belgrade in the 2022/23 Champions League third qualifying round, the tie in which they were eliminated after reaching that stage for the first time. Pyunik have been regular European qualifiers for two decades without reaching a group stage until relatively recently. Their best run came in 2022/23: a Champions League qualifying campaign that carried them to the third qualifying round, further than any Armenian club had gone before, where they were eliminated 0-7 by Red Star Belgrade of Serbia; they then dropped into the Europa League play-off round against Sheriff Tiraspol of Moldova, where both legs finished goalless and Pyunik were eliminated; and they finally reached the Conference League group stage, the club's first, where they won two of six matches, including a win credited as the first UEFA group-stage win by an Armenian side, and lost four.
In 2024/25 Pyunik again entered the Champions League in the first qualifying round before dropping down the European ladder and ultimately reaching the Conference League play-off round, where their opponents were Celje of Slovenia; Celje's own account of that tie has them winning 4-2 on aggregate to eliminate Pyunik, which is consistent with what is recorded here, though the individual leg scores were not established from the sources read here.
