The club

Rangers were founded in March 1872 and play at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, which opened on 30 December 1899 and holds 51,700. The club are known as the Gers, the Light Blues and the Teddy Bears. Royal blue is the primary colour, with white and red.

Recent seasons

Rangers have been in the Scottish Premiership throughout. They won the 2020/21 title with 102 points from an unbeaten 38 games, 32 wins and six draws under Steven Gerrard, winning all 19 home matches and conceding 13 goals, a British record for a 38-match season. It was their first championship in a decade, confirmed on 7 March 2021.

They were runners-up in each of the next four seasons: 89 points in 2021/22, when they also won the Scottish Cup, 93 in 2022/23, 85 in 2023/24, when they won the League Cup, and 75 in 2024/25. In 2025/26 they finished third with 72 points, 20 wins, 12 draws and six defeats, 76 goals for and 43 against, behind champions Celtic on 82 and Hearts on 80. It was a season of upheaval: Russell Martin, appointed head coach on 5 June 2025, was sacked on 5 October after a 1-1 draw with Falkirk left Rangers eighth with one win in seven league games, and Danny Rohl took charge from 20 October. Rangers reached the League Cup semi-final and the Scottish Cup quarter-final, and dropped out of Champions League qualifying into the Europa League phase, where they won one of eight.

Further back, the pre-2012 company was liquidated and the new one, refused SPL membership, started in the bottom tier, winning the Third Division in 2012/13, League One in 2013/14 and the Championship in 2015/16 to return to the top flight.

Honours and landmarks

Fifty-five domestic league championships, 34 Scottish Cups and 28 Scottish League Cups, the last of those a competition record. Seven domestic trebles. In 1996/97 they won a ninth successive championship, equalling Celtic's run of the late 1960s and early 1970s. They were the first Scottish side to reach a European final, in 1961, and won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1972, beating Dynamo Moscow 3-2 at the Camp Nou; a pitch invasion meant the trophy was handed over in the dressing room and UEFA banned them from defending it.

Record home league attendance is 118,567 against Celtic on 2 January 1939. Rangers also hold the Scottish Cup attendance record, 143,570 against Hibernian at Hampden Park on 27 March 1948. John Greig made 755 appearances between 1961 and 1978. Ally McCoist scored 355 goals between 1983 and 1998. Record fee paid is £12m for Tore Andre Flo from Chelsea on 23 November 2000; record fee received is £19.6m for Calvin Bassey to Ajax on 20 July 2022.

Notable scorelines

Record win is 14-2, twice: against Whitehill on 29 September 1883 and Blairgowrie on 20 January 1934. Record league win is 10-0 against Hibernian on 24 December 1898. Record defeat is 2-10 against Airdrieonians in a friendly on 6 February 1886; record league defeat 0-6 against Dumbarton on 4 May 1892. The heaviest Old Firm defeat is the 7-1 League Cup final loss to Celtic on 19 October 1957.

Two European finals were lost: 2-0 to Zenit Saint Petersburg in the UEFA Cup final in Manchester on 14 May 2008, and the Europa League final in Seville on 18 May 2022, 1-1 after extra time with Eintracht Frankfurt, Joe Aribo scoring, lost 5-4 on penalties.

By competition: league 343 matches, Rangers 130, Celtic 119, 94 draws; Scottish Cup 56, Celtic 27, Rangers 18, 11 draws; League Cup 53, Celtic 26, Rangers 24, three draws. The last meeting was 10 May 2026, Celtic 3-1 Rangers; the first Old Firm league match of 2026/27 is scheduled for 20 September 2026. Celtic also knocked Rangers out of the League Cup semi-final at Hampden on 2 November 2025, 3-1 after extra time before 49,446.

Right now (2026/27)

Derek McInnes was appointed manager on 17 June 2026 on a three-year contract, replacing Danny Rohl. He came directly from Hearts, whom he had coached since 19 May 2025 and led to second place in 2025/26, their best Premiership finish in twenty years. His assistants are Alan Archibald and Paul Sheerin. Lawrence Shankland is club captain.

Shankland joined from Hearts for an undisclosed fee, as did defender Ross McCrorie from Bristol City. Midfielder Cammy Devlin also came from Hearts, free, on 11 July 2026. Goalkeeper Ivor Pandur cost £6m from Hull City on 30 June, midfielder Dan Neil came free from Sunderland on 1 July, midfielder Vanja Dragojevic cost £4.6m from Partizan Belgrade on 23 July, and defender Olwethu Makhanya £3m from Philadelphia Union on 30 July. Ben Godfrey is on loan from Atalanta.

The departures reshaped the spine. James Tavernier, the long-serving captain, left at the end of his contract on 24 May 2026. Ben Davies went to Bolton Wanderers free on 10 June and Leon King to Ayr United free on 16 July. Jack Butland was sold to Hull City for £3m on 2 July and Oliver Antman to Anderlecht for £4.5m on 29 July. Danilo, Oscar Cortes, Bailey Rice, Paul Nsio, Zebedee Lawson and Aiden McCallion went out on loan.

Rangers played no Premier Sports Cup group stage. As Europa League entrants they were exempt to the second round, along with Celtic, Hearts, Motherwell and Hibernian; the groups ran from 11 to 26 July 2026 without them. Their cup begins at home to St Mirren at Ibrox on 16 August 2026, 16:00.

The league campaign opens away to Dundee United at Tannadice Park on Friday 31 July 2026 at 20:00 BST, the first match of the season. The Europa League third qualifying round follows against Jagiellonia Bialystok, away on 6 August and at Ibrox on 13 August.
