FC Red Bull Salzburg
Also written as RB Salzburg, Red Bull Salzburg, Salzburg.
The club
The club was founded on 13 September 1933 as SV Austria Salzburg and was renamed and rebranded by Red Bull GmbH in 2005, a change that prompted a supporter breakaway and still shapes how the club is seen in Austria. They play at the Red Bull Arena in Wals-Siezenheim, just outside the city, capacity 30,188. They are Die Roten Bullen, the Red Bulls, and play in red and white. In European competition UEFA's sponsorship rules require them to appear as FC Salzburg with a modified crest, which is why the feed and the scoreboard may not agree on the name.
Recent seasons
Salzburg won ten consecutive Austrian Bundesliga titles from 2013/14 to 2022/23, including the four seasons 2019/20, 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23. That run has ended. The 2023/24 finish was not confirmed from the sources read here; in 2024/25 they were third of twelve and in 2025/26 third of twelve again. LASK won both the 2025/26 league title, their second, and the 2025/26 Austrian Cup. Third place is what sent Salzburg into the Europa League third qualifying round rather than into the Champions League.
Honours and landmarks
Seventeen Austrian Bundesliga titles, the first in 1993/94 and the most recent in 2022/23. Nine Austrian Cups: 2011/12, 2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22, every one of them part of a league and cup double.
Notable scorelines
No all-time record win or record defeat was confirmed from the sources read here. The results the club is defined by in Europe are the two 1-0 defeats to Internazionale in the 1994 UEFA Cup final, and the 4-0 loss at Milan in the 2022/23 Champions League group stage.
European record
As SV Austria Salzburg the club reached the 1994 UEFA Cup final and lost it to Internazionale, both legs 1-0. That remains the deepest run in the club's history.
Under the Red Bull name the pattern has been strong domestic dominance converted into European qualification and then modest returns. They reached the Europa League semi-final in 2017/18, going out to Marseille 3-2 on aggregate after extra time. They reached the Champions League group stage for the first time in 2019/20.
In 2022/23 they finished third in Group E of the Champions League: 1-1 at home and 0-4 away against Milan, 1-2 and 1-1 against Chelsea, and 1-0 and 1-1 against Dinamo Zagreb. They were then eliminated by Roma in the Europa League knockout round play-off. In 2023/24 they finished fourth in Group D: 1-3 and 2-0 against Benfica, 0-2 and 0-0 against Real Sociedad, and 0-1 and 1-2 against Internazionale. In 2024/25 they finished 34th in the new Champions League league phase with one win, one draw and six defeats. In 2025/26 they beat Brann 5-2 over two legs in the second qualifying round and then went out in the third to Club Brugge, losing 0-1 at home and 2-3 away for 2-4 on aggregate, before finishing 31st in the Europa League league phase.
Quotes
No directly quoted material was confirmed from the sources read here. The club's own site served headline and navigation content only to the fetches attempted for this dossier, with the article bodies and the match preview text not returned, and the Austrian outlets tried carried nothing verbatim on the current tie.
Right now (2026/27)
Danny Rohl, the German coach, was appointed on 17 June 2026. He is the fourth man in the job in under two years. Thomas Letsch, appointed in December 2024, left on 17 February 2026; Daniel Beichler took over the next day and lasted to 18 May 2026, the end of a second consecutive third-place season. The sources read here give those dates but do not say in what terms either departure was announced, so no claim is made about who was sacked and who resigned.
The summer's traffic has been steady rather than dramatic and much of it has been outward. Adam Daghim moved to Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga, announced on 2 August 2026. Zeteny Jano moved to SSV Jahn Regensburg in the German third tier, announced on 11 August 2026 and reported by ORF on 12 August. Goalkeeper Christian Fruchtl arrived from Lecce, announced on 5 August 2026; no fee or contract length was given in the club's announcement as read here. Enrique Aguilar was ruled out for several weeks in an injury update published on 7 August 2026.
In the Austrian Bundesliga, Salzburg have four points from two matches, one win and one draw, including a 1-0 win over Hartberg, and sit fourth as of 10 August 2026.
The tie Salzburg are in right now is the Europa League third qualifying round, Main Path, against Pafos of Cyprus. They won the first leg 1-0 at the Red Bull Arena on 6 August 2026, Haris Tabakovic scoring on 88 minutes to break a tie that had looked like finishing goalless. The second leg is at the Alphamega Stadium in Limassol on 13 August 2026. Pafos are not a token opponent: they knocked Hajduk Split out of this competition in the previous round, losing 2-0 in Split and then winning 4-0 in Limassol after extra time, two of those goals coming in the extra half-hour. That is precisely the scenario a one-goal Salzburg lead is exposed to, on the same ground. The play-off round draw was made on 3 August 2026, so Salzburg already know the winner meets Mjallby of Sweden, away first on 20 August.
Separately, the 2026 UEFA Super Cup was staged in Salzburg on 12 August 2026, Paris Saint-Germain against Aston Villa, and the club published a supporter information hub for it on 10 August.
