Shamrock Rovers
Also written as Shamrock.
The club
Shamrock Rovers are Ireland's most successful club. The founding date is given as 1899, though the club was officially registered with the Leinster Football Association in 1901 and the earlier date is disputed. After decades without a home of their own following the sale of Glenmalure Park in 1987, they moved into Tallaght Stadium in south Dublin in 2009; it holds 10,547. They play in green and white hoops, worn since 1926, and are known simply as the Hoops.
Recent seasons
Rovers have dominated the League of Ireland Premier Division in the 2020s, and won it again in 2025 for their tenth Premier Division title. They are the defending champions in 2026.
The 2026 season is played on the calendar year and is well advanced. As of 9 August 2026 Rovers led the Premier Division with 54 points from 27 matches, 16 wins, 6 draws and 5 defeats, seven clear of St Patrick's Athletic on 47, with Bohemians third on 44 and Dundalk fourth on 37. They drew 0-0 away to Drogheda in the league in the days before the Egnatia first leg.
Honours and landmarks
Twenty-two League of Ireland titles, a record, the most recent in 2025. Twenty-six FAI Cups, also a record. Two Setanta Sports Cups, in 2011 and 2013, and seven all-Ireland competition wins. In August 2026 Graham Burke became the leading Irish goalscorer in European football with his sixteenth European goal, passing Robbie Keane.
Notable scorelines
No club-record win or record defeat was established from the sources read here. The results that define the modern club are European: the 3-2 aggregate win over Partizan Belgrade in 2011 that took Rovers into the Europa League group stage, the first Irish club to reach a European group; the 2024/25 Conference League league phase that took them into the knockout play-off, again the first for an Irish club, where Molde beat them on penalties; and, on the other side of the ledger, the 3-0 aggregate defeat to Juventus in 2010/11 and the 2-0 loss to Milan in 2020.
European record
Rovers are the reference point for Irish clubs in Europe. In 2011/12 they beat Flora Tallinn 1-0 on aggregate in Champions League qualifying and then, after dropping into the Europa League, eliminated Partizan Belgrade 3-2 on aggregate to become the first Irish club to reach the group stage of a European competition. They returned to a group in the Conference League in 2022 and again in 2024, and the 2024/25 Conference League campaign took them further than any Irish club has been: through the league phase to the knockout play-off round, where Molde eliminated them on penalties.
The 2026/27 campaign has already run through three ties. As League of Ireland champions they entered the Champions League champions path first qualifying round and beat Floriana of Malta 5-3 on aggregate in early July 2026. In the second qualifying round Ararat-Armenia beat them 3-2 on aggregate, winning 2-0 in Yerevan on 21 July through Sandro Lima on 51 minutes and Zidane Banjaqui on 80, with Rovers winning the Tallaght return 2-1 on 28 July but going out.
That dropped them into the Europa League third qualifying round against Egnatia, the Albanian champions, and this is where Rovers have played their best European football of the season.

- "There's a little bit of frustration, the performance was excellent, but we possibly should have had four or five or six tonight and they weren't difficult chances, the ones that we're talking about. So yeah, I'm a little bit frustrated with that but the performance was really good." - Stephen Bradley, Shamrock Rovers head coach, to RTE, 5 August 2026, after the 3-1 first-leg win over Egnatia. https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2026/0804/1586501-bradley-disappointed-rovers-didnt-score-more-goals/

Right now (2026/27)
Stephen Bradley is the head coach, as he has been since 2016. Summer transfer detail was not established from the sources read here and is not asserted; the players who have decided the European ties are Graham Burke, the centre-half Pico Lopes and the forward Aaron Greene.
Rovers lead the 2026 League of Ireland Premier Division by seven points with 54 from 27 matches, so the domestic season is under control and the European tie is the one that carries risk.
The European tie: Shamrock Rovers are in the **Europa League third qualifying round** against **Egnatia**, the Albanian champions, having dropped out of the Champions League to Ararat-Armenia. **The first leg was at Tallaght Stadium on 4 August 2026 and Rovers won 3-1.** The attendance was not confirmed from the sources read here. Graham Burke put them ahead from the penalty spot on 27 minutes, his sixteenth European goal, which made him the leading Irish scorer in European football ahead of Robbie Keane. Guilherme Jaime equalised from a penalty on 39. Pico Lopes headed Rovers back in front on 55 and Aaron Greene made it 3-1 on 57. Egnatia's goalkeeper Mario Dajsinani kept the margin down with several saves, which is why Bradley was frustrated rather than satisfied.
The second leg is at the Arena Egnatia on 13 August 2026. Winning it takes Rovers into the Europa League play-off round and, crucially, guarantees them a place in a league phase whatever happens in that tie, because a Europa League play-off loser drops into the Conference League league phase. The identity of the play-off opponent was not confirmed from the sources read here.
